Dear Beth Lloyd,
We hope you have a fantastic Rock n Roll party this evening; that you rock the whole way around the clock – with music from the ‘50s - and midnight sees you enjoying the start of the 50s.
I apologise for not being able to make the bash, but promise we’ll make amends.
Lotsa love –

Names Directory Entries With Bad E-mail Addresses:
With respect to one of the new lists mentioned in the update below, the following people have e-mail addresses in their entries that no longer work:- Grant Clark
- Louis Fuchs
- John Gray
- Elizabeth Halliday
- Grant Knowles
- Charles Mc Farlane
- Ian Meyrick
- Hugh (Reg) Ritchie
- Chris Tyrer
- Alister Watson
- Brian Williams
- Katherine Williams
These are just the ones I know about. I intend to do a mass mailing next week and will surely have a few to add to this list after that.
As it says below, you can fix this problem by logging in to update your entry. Thanks very much.

Recent Site Updates:
August 31st, 2002:- Added automatically-generated lists of recent additions and updates to the Names Directory to the home page of the Directory. Now you can see who has joined the GNR or updated their entry within the last week.
- Also added a list of people whose e-mail addresses no longer work. This is not necessarily complete, as people are only added as they come to my attention. If your e-mail address does not work, people will not be able to contact you (that goes without saying) and neither will you be able to log into the message board to post messages. You can update the e-mail address in your entry after you log in.

When ever my brothers had something in their bedrooms, they used to leave a chameleon or two wandering loose in there. None of the servants would go in to tidy or clean and the contraband remained safely hidden. My mother always used to stop and pick chameleons up of the roadside and take them home to put in her rose garden. They certainly cured greenfly in a hurry. Perhaps this is something Zambia could export for organic gardeners. By the way we did try and put them on something red, as it was commonly held that it would make them explode - we were very young - but it never happened. They turned a sort of pink but never red. Anyone know why?

CJ. Some more chameleon myths for you:-
1. If seen by a chameleon a pregnant woman will have a difficult childbirth.
2. If it crosses your path it will bring bad luck (Is this why Heather always stops and moves them of the road)
3. A girl will remain unwed if a chameleon looks in her eyes.
4. Chameleons are messengers of evil ghosts in Gambia and Native women will expose their breasts and spray milk on chameleons to calm the ghosts.
5. If a man touches a chameleon he is not allowed to touch his wife for 3 days. (Madagascar)

Heather,
All this talk about Chameleons has jogged the old brain cells. I vaquely recall an old tale among the Bemba? people. It was about God ordering Lizard and Chameleon to take messages to Man. Chameleon was instructed to tell the people that when they died - they would return. Lizard was to tell them that when they died – it was the end. Lizard arrived first and said, 'When Man dies – that’s the end.' After quite a while, Chameleon arrived and said, 'When Men die – they’ll return.' Man didn’t know which one to believe. Thats why, today, they kill the Chameleon whenever they see him - because he arrived too late bearing good news. Lizard is also hated because of the bad news he brought - and runs for his life whenever he sees Man.
I also recall a belief that staring at a Chameleon was dangerous. It could flick its tongue up a person’s nose, and suck the juices from his brain.
Needless to say, I still find Chameleons fascinating creatures, and am sure there are many more myths associated with them.
Regards.

BANBURY HEALTH WARNING
Be careful of any concoctions Garry Brasso has prepared.
-----------------------------------------------
Potency concoction kills Mazabuka cop
Zambia Ind.Post. Thur29 Aug 2002
A policeman has died in Mazabuka after taking an overdose of male potency drugs.
The medicine was given to him by a traditional healer as they took opaque beer at a tavern in Kaleya. Police yesterday said Alex Mayumbelo died four hours after he took the medicine given to him by Sylus Sikulya, a traditional healer from Magoye. Police said the officer died after he took the medicine which was supposed to enhance his sexual appetite.
The traditional healer has since been arrested. Speaking from the police cells, Sikulya wondered why his patient died when they took the same medicine together.
He admitted that they had both taken the same concoction to prepare themselves for that night.

No, I didn't squash the chameleon. In fact, I'm the stupid woman who stops and picks up chameleons crossing the road and puts them safely in the bush. But they're always a little pissed off by that stage - they get pretty windswept when a car passes over them. I stopped well before reaching this one, but I guess I was the first human he had ever seen. How did I know he was a male? When I approached him, he flattened himself out and tried to make out that he was bigger that he really was and only a male would do that.
You want to come back? Don't forget the Reunion which I am organising next year in September. I haven't posted a reminder on the board this month, but some basic details are on the June or July message board. And I will soon be able to start negotiating definite rates for hotels etc.

Great photos of your very angry chameleon, Musonda Falls, and Mambilima Rapids.
Our little backyard fellow was a gentle green by comparison, and relatively undisturbed.
Your chap was doing a great camouflage job on the dappled road surface. I hope you ,or anyone else, didn't squash him!
Your magnificent shots of the countryside are making an old-timer restless again; I took our Kitwe-born daughter, Linda, back to Zambia 2 years ago to her birthplace, after 32 years. I want to go back again!

I'm going with the theory that it is Beauteous reaching from the grave. I like that better.. he! he! Actually, my hubby told me the same thing you did. Much less exciting. Linda,
To give you a specific answer I'd need to know which virus it is. However, it's probably the Klez virus and, even if it isn't, it's probably one that does the same thing -- i.e., spoofs the address in the "from" field.
These viruses get their supply of e-mail addresses from different sources. The primary source is, as usual, the Outlook (or Outlook Express) address book. However, they also get them from e-mail addresses on Web pages, old e-mail messages, and documents on the infected computer that contain e-mail addresses.
Simply put, someone whose computer is infected probably visited a Web page with your fake e-mail address on it (probably an old message board, although this message board now has that address) and so that address became part of the pool of addresses available to the virus. In the course of spreading itself it happened to pair your real e-mail address (in the "to" field, obviously) and your fake address (in the "from" field) and so it looks like Beauteous is getting back at you for doing her in. This is most likely just a coincidence, and the virus on the same computer probably also tried to send itself to bigbebby@yowza.com -- as well as probably sending copies of itself in messages that appeared to come from your real e-mail address and sent to other addresses in its "pool".
As it is, I get copies of this virus every day, and some of them appear to have come from other addresses that are mine, so it looks like I'm sending myself the virus. This is not the case, and a little sleuthing of the information contained in the extended headers can sometimes reveal the real culprit.

Craig
Have a question.. I received a virus from myself today! It surprised me as it originated from bigbebby@yowza.com which was actually my "ficticious" email when I posted as Beauteous on the GNR. I am confused as to how that could be? I mean, since that was not a real email, I am assuming that it then really originated from my own email address. Is that possible? Is the problem with me, personally, or is the virus working its way through the GNR email addresses? Just curious. My software zapped it.
Thanks!

Musonda Falls
Heather your picture of the Musonda Falls reminded me of a remote mission near the river. There was plenty of water but none near the mission. The fathers got tired of carting water for an ever increasing population in old oildrums from the river to the mission. So they commissioned a friend of mine , Ton Maltoun a huge Dutchman who was a lecturer at the University with the School of Mining and Engineering to design a waterpump that didnt need electricity, wind power or diesel engines to run.
I thought this was an impossible task but within a short time, Ton had designed what is called a "Rampump". It was so simple and used the force of flowing water in a pipe to pump a little bit at a time uphill. It only had one moving part,-a ball valve. Ton sent the drawings to the mission and the Fathers built it themselves. The pump was still working years later when Ton left to go back to the Netherlands.
If Gordon Garlick's son-in-law Jimmy Smith reads this , he will remember Ton. He was the only person who could stop Jimmy Smith in a water-polo match.

Arthur,
Thanks for all the memories in the photos from the Rhokana Review. Yes I will bring mine along to the bash.
Re Diggers RFC the McCullums shown are not brothers but cousins. Roy's brother is Ian and both of them played for the Boks. Their father was Jimmy a fantastic centre half who played many a good game for NR including his last when he markewd the great Jackie Milburn out of the match when NR played Newcastle. Alastairs dad was Billy who pyayed inside forward for Nkana. Alastair is a High Court Judge somewhere up north.
Some other people recognised in the other photo's are:
No 1 Prince Charles Schoo; I found Joan Bramwell in the 2nd row and Ian Andersons sister in front of her.
4th Photo: Gordon Millar next to Joan(and Bertie) Bramwells sister.
2nd Photo: Valarie? Curtis, Cocky Carew, Jannie Myburgh, Ken Loots and Ossie Osborne. Right at the back Bob Ball.

7th Photo Bancroft Elenor Kennet, Madelaine Kennet and Arthur Schmidt ex Boma Street Kitwe
In the pic at the panto Del Koenderman is at the back on the left. The picture by the way was taken in the Rhokana Cinema as anyone who visited it often can tell by the pillar

GNR Power
One of the GNR's most powerful uses is as a facility to put old friends from NR/Zambia in contact with each other again.
In February 2002 several ex-Zambian musicians from Mufulira made contact again through the GNR after having lost contact for 20 plus years.
On Saturday 24th August 2002, these ex-Mufulira musicians were reunited at a private birthday party in Durban. John Costopoulos, Des Brand, Alistair Coakley and Paudie Coughlan formed their first band in 1967 while at Mufulira High School.

This photo was taken in Mufulira in 1968.

This photo was taken on 24th August 2002 in Durban following the contacts made through the GNR. Left to right, John Costopoulos (now based in Durban); Des Brand (now based in Jo'burg), Alistair Coakley (now based in Jo'burg); and Paudie Coughlan (now based in the Republic of Ireland). After the taking of this photo, these musicians got together on stage to play together for the first time since last playing at a session at Mufulira Rugby Club in January 1971. Talk about a nostalgic event!!!!
The private party was a joint 50th birthday party thrown by newly fifty year-olds John Costopoulos ( muso ex-Mufulira); Mike Thomas (muso ex-Luanshya); and Howie Silk (civilian ex-Kitwe).
Other ex-Zambian muso's present and who also performed at the party were Keith Fordice (ex-Kitwe), Robbie Centonze (ex-Ndola), Pete Trollip (ex-Kitwe), Juha Kormano (ex-Kitwe), Janne Sonderland (ex-Kitwe). Juha and Janne flew out from Finland for the party.
Some other ex-NR/Zambians present were:
Roger Costopoulos (ex-Mufulira)
Helen de Kock (nee King, ex-Mufulira)
Irene Hannah (nee Costopoulos, ex-Mufulira)
Fay Centonze (nee Thornicroft, ex-Ndola)
Mark and Paula (nee Galloway) Gibson (ex-Kitwe)
Sheila Wallis (nee Stone, ex-Mufulira)
Linda Minotti (ex-Ndola)
Pauline Gibley (ex-Kitwe)
Clive and Jenny (nee Yarde, ex-Mufulira)
Neil Connelly (ex-Mufulira)
Of the above muso's, John Costopoulos, Mile Thomas and Paudie Coughlan will be performing at the Banbury Bash in September, along with Brian Geyser, Thelma Holland, Kim and Jamie Costopoulos, and Tina Magee.

Johnny G,
From what I can ascertain, you’re very much on the right track with your reference to 'hospital'! I’ve been informed by an authority on the subject that, if we use the following formula, we should see the light.
a)For the first word – take the word “hospital’ and add “ity’ to its end.
B)For the second word – take the first three letters of the word “hospital’ and, dicarding the rest, add ‘el’ to the end of what you’re left with.
How did you manage to deduce the source so quickly? I can only assume that my formative years afforded me far more protection than yours.

I hope that Heather can locate one or more of the trainees and let us know whether it was two or ten cats, and I wonder if they ever got over the phase that they were forced to under go or are they still dangling around some where on ropes, and I wonder if the girl and the missionary ever married and lived happily ever after in an empty oil drum, perhaps we will never know.

Thank you very much for the chameleon picture. Here are two photos of a very annoyed chameleon taken on the Great North Road (in April) - he didn't like his meander across the road being interrupted.

MUSONDA FALLS (and the road approaching them)
These falls used to be called Johnson Falls and are about 55 km north of Mansa on the Luongo River. There is now a hydro station there, which accounts for the small amount of water.
MAMBILIMA RAPIDS
These are on the Luapula River, about 80 km north of Mansa.

Johnny,
I apologise for any confusion or embarrassment I may have caused you. I’ve just been told, by an extremely well travelled acquaintance, that a ‘cathouse’ can also mean a ‘house of ill repute’!
I, with my protected Northern Rhodesian upbringing and limited experience, was naturally refering to the place where the good Doctor Ma Kuku trained his two (or ten?) cats for space travel.

ZAMBIAN SPACEFLIGHT
[Reprinted from Investigator No. 2 1988 September.]
________________________________________________________________
The Director
Ministry of Technology
Lusaka
Zambia
Dear Sir,
Could you inform me of the outcome of Zambia’s space flight program of the 1960s. An official news report of November 3 1964 stated:
America and Russia may lose the race to the moon, according to Edward Mukaka Nkoloso, Director-General of the Zambia National Academy of Space Research.
His ten Zambian astronauts and a seventeen-year-old African girl are poised for the countdown. He said: “I’ll have my first Zambian astronaut on the moon by 1965. My spacemen are ready, but we’re having a few difficulties…we are using my own firing system, derived from the catapult.”
Mr. Nkoloso continued: “To really get going we need about seven hundred million pounds. It sounds a lot of money, but imagine the prestige value it would earn for Zambia. But I’ve had trouble with my space-men and space-women. They won’t concentrate on space-flight; there’s too much love-making when they should be studying the moon. Matha Mwamba, the seventeen-year-old girl who had been chosen to be the first coloured woman on Mars, has also to feed her ten cats, who will be her companions on the long space flight… I’m getting them acclimatised to space-travel by placing them in my space-capsule every day. It’s a 40-gallon oil drum in which they sit, and I then roll them down a hill. This gives them the feeling of rushing through space. I also make them swing from the end of a long rope. When they reach the highest point, I cut the rope—this produces a feeling of free fall.”
I assume that the request for seven hundred million pounds was made by Z.N.A.S.R. to the United Nations. Please inform me whether Zambia received the grant and whether significant progress in space flight resulted.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Sir,
I refer to your letter dated 24th May, 1988 in connection with outcome of Zambia’s space programme.
I wish to inform you that the matter under discussion was never seriously taken up by the Zambian Government and as such no official backing was rendered to Mr. Mukaka Nkoloso’s efforts. The programme therefore died a natural death.

As an added rider to Elias's news clip on the Zambian space Dr for all his denounciation of America and there spies, he did send a letter to NASA asking them to send him a few million dollars to continue with his experiments at his space training camp, they must have had a report from the American ambassador in Lusaka as they did not send him any dollars but they did send him a load of technical books on rocketry that I doubt he could understand one word of, I wonder what happened to them and where they are today if they suvived the Chimbooses around Lusaka? but for all he seemed a little ecentric he was still in there looking at the main chance money, so maybe not as daft as he appeared.
Regards Johnny.
PS
Maybe Heather could get an interview with his two candidates for space the young girl and the missionary as they could still be alive.

Your photos bring back so many memories, and tears to the eyes often enough. Having returned from Zambia two and a half years ago, my husband and I still pine for Zambia, and your photos make it worse!
I remember sitting around in the Simba School staff room when your lowdown first came to Ndola, it was very well read, passed around between all the staff members. It was black and white then, but i see from your site that it is now in colour.
We had some great holidays in kafue national park, and kasanka national park (when we didn't quite make it all the way to bangweulu, I was nearly 3 months pregnant and horrendously carsick for the first and only time in my life), and your photos bring it all back vividly as Kasanka became a favourite place to visit on the long weekends.
The waterfalls are amazing, we saw quite a few when we were up at lake tanganyika and mbala, and although we always wanted to do the tour in "Just Driving around in the North" we never managed it before heading back to NZ.
Anyway, thanks for all the time and effort you have put into having your photos uploaded to this site, they are much appreciated, even when they tug at the heart strings so much.

Dr Edward Nkolosa.Zambia' first Spaceman
Some time ago we were amused at Dr Nkoloso's training methods for his "astronauts". Such as rolling them downhill in dustbins, swinging them from ropes etc.
This lengthy article was written by him personally and published in The Times of Zambia. There is a photo attached showing him and a female astronaut with two cats that he was training to go to Mars. Unfortunately it is so faded even Arthur wouldnt be able to correct it.
__________________________________________________________
Article writen after the independance in 1964. (Lusaka museum)
I see the Zambia of the future as a space-age Zambia, more advanced than Russia and America. In fact, in my academy of science our thinking is already six or seven years ahead of both powers.
It is unlucky for Lusaka that I did not have the chance to run for mayor. If I had been elected, the capital city of Zambia would quickly have been another Paris, if not another New-York.
If I had been mayor, Matero, Kamwala and Chilenge suburbs would quickly have been filled with flats and skyscapers. Old houses would have vanished.
But never mind, we will have our Paris yet.
If I had had my way Zambia would have been born with the blast of academy's rocket being launched into space. But the Independence Celebrations Comitee said that would terrify the guests and possibly the whole population. I think they were worried about the dust and noise.
CREW READY
It is a great pity. All is ready at our secret headquarters in a valley about seven miles from Lusaka. The rocket could have been launched from the Independence Stadium and Zambia would have conquered Mars only a few days after the independence. Yes, that is where we plan to go - Mars.
We have been studying Mars from our telescopes at our headquarters and are now certain Mars is populated by primitive natives.
Our rocket crew is ready. Specially trained spacegirl Mata Mwambwa, two cats (also specially trained) and a missionary will be launched in our first rocket.
But I have warned the missionary he must not force Christianity to the people if they do not want it.
One other difficulty has been holding us up. UNESCO has not reply to our request for £ 7,000,000 and we need that money for our rocket programme. Then we can lead the world science.
I feel the Zambian Government should help now if we are to become Controllers of the Seventh Heaven of Interstellar space. The Government must pass strong bills to deal with the Satanic plots of our ennemies.
I have known for a long time that Russian spies are operating in Zambia. Yes, and American spies are well over the town too. They are all trying to capture Mata and my cats. They want our space secrets.
These people must be dealt with immediately after the independence if I am to keep my space lead. Detention without trial for all spies is what we need.
Otherwise I am happy with the Government, but it must encourage youngsters to join the academy.
At the moment they have knocked down my academy building in Matero. That is not good. I hope they build modern flats in its place to provide more offices for us.
The capital of the new scientific Zambia must look beautiful. People from afar must not see a slum as the capital of the world's greatest scientific state.
Zambians are inferior to no men in science technology. My space plans will surely be carried out.

To all you Freemasons,
Here is a joke I heard a few years ago and probably only Freemasons will understand it, no ofence to others.
Pat and Mick came over from Ireland to Scotland looking for work and were living in Digs in Glasgow, It was a Sunday when they arrived, and in these days there were no pubs open on a Sunday. Pat and Mick were strolling round Glasgow looking for a place they could get a drink, and they came upon this Masonic Lodge, Pat said to Mick, com'on will git a drink in here, Mick said no way am I going in there, it's a Masonic Lodge, Pat say's Com'on they will nae ken any better, Mick say's you go if you want I'm going back tae the digs.
A few hours later Pat comes back tae the digs covered in bandages, and an arm in sling, Mick say's whit happened tae you, Pat say's well I went in tae that lodge, and this guy asked me where I came from, I told him Befast, well he sat me doon, gave me drink, then these other guy's came over talked tae me and they gave me more drink, and eventually this other one came over and shook ma hand, and he said Boa, and I said Peep, and that's when all the fun started.
No secrets given away.

Some more photos with messages posted below from the membership.
The Names Directory is going well and we've had 60+ members join already this month, I expect all the Banbury Bash attendees will be in the directory by now.
If you've lost your password or want to change your existing one to something more memorable this is now very easy to resolve - also you can update or change your existing details if you wish.
Gary Brasso
I don't expect there would be by now, but if there are any Banbury Bash revellers who remain in your debt please send the list to the headmasters office. Suitable measures will be taken.

Too baladdy late for me - you noticed I am already dribbling - take a look at my T-Shirt in the Wallasey Bash photos. I am to bringing a bib to Banbury.

This picture shows two RST King Air transports of the Prospecting Division flying over the Kalengwa open pit. No doubt the famous Keith Davidson was involved. Keith was known as Farley to his friends and was a fine bush pilot.

Arthur: We have just returned from two week's leave, so I have some catching up to do re Congo/Zaire photos from old slides.
Legend: 132:

Congolese customs entry point at Kasumbalesa, just north of Bancroft (Chililabombwe).
I remember there was about 10 miles of "no man's land" between the Zambian departure gate, and entry into the Congo.

133 & 134: Views of Sabena Guest House (yes, Johnny Green and Dave Cooper, we did stay there too. We also enjoyed the cheap Simba beer, at about 1/- eqivalent per litre!)

135: Further views at E'ville airport, showing the conning tower, where we had our camera snatched by an over-zealous gendarme, who had been reading James Bond (we saw the French translation on his desk!) We also had bayoneted rifles poked through our car window at road blocks on the Lubumbashi road in those exciting times (no photo!).

136: Further views of the Hippo Pool, just outside Chingola, featuring my wife, Karen on the rocks.

137: (a) Just for Heather, a shot of a now long-dead chameleon in our back garden, 20 13th Street, Chingola.
(b) Piccanins and hippo snouts, Kafue River.
Johnny G. Yes, we do remember Copperfields corner butchery in Princess(?) Street Chingola; the butcher my namesake taught my wife Karen how to cook and serve a ham properly, for which we shall remain forever grateful. Sorry to hear of his too- early demise with a burst appendix.
Do you have an e-mail address for his brother or widow? Incidentally, my dad's name was also Jim, not altogether unlikely with the Scottish background of the Allan clan. He did not live in Zambia or NR though.
Best wishes to all
Bob and Karen Allan

FREEMASSONS .......
Ah.... the secrets of Freemasons. During the late 1950's growing up in Lusaka, I remember both my dad and Grandfather
dressing up in tuxedoes and going of to lodge meetings carrying their mysterious little wooden brief cases containing their colourful aprons and other mystical paraphernalia.
Both Dad and my Grandfather, were Brethern of the Scottish Constitution. My Grandfather, James Mees was a member of the Services 1291 Lodge in Edinburgh, Scotland, and my Dad, Tommy Miller was a member of the Lodge of Unity 1510,which was founded in Lusaka on February 2nd, 1956.
The Lodge meetings were held on a regular basis and I recall that one on the Brethern would be assigned to cater the dinner that they would have after their meetings. I am led to believe that the Brethern also enjoyed a few drams of Scotch as they toasted each other, and to ward off the scourge of malaria.
When it was Dad's turn to cater, my Mum with the help of Lefty our cook/houseboy ( domestic servant to be politically
correct) would plan and prepare the meal. Dad and Grandad would load up the volkswagen and head of to the meeting, no doubt accepting the credit for themselves, that the Brothers would lavish on them for the great meal.
Dad, never did discuss the business of the Masons, and apart from a few stolen peeks into the mysterious wooden brief case and trying to decipher a little blue book with mystical drawings, I was never able solve the secrets behind the Masons.
Both Brother Mees and Miller have passed on carrying with them traditions and secrets that have bonded thousands of men through the ages. Their aprons and other trappings of membership have long since disappeared with them. The only reference that I have of Dad and my Grandfather being masons is a printed announcement of an " Informal Meeting at Sea" held on board the S.S. "Braemar Castle on Thursday, 2nd January. 1958, by kind permission of Captain H.L. Holland.
The announcement listed all who attended, and that " The toast to the youngest Bro. present. Bro. T. Miller, was proposed by Wor. Bro. W. J. Savage and seconded by Bro. L.T. Davey."
Dad never did share his association of Freemasonry with me, not even the secret handshake.

Ask Mrs. Knox in Dundee about freemasons in Kitwe. My uncle John Finlayson and Mr.Knox were big in the Kitwe masons. My father also used to leave the house once a week carrying a mysterious little brief case - when I was a kid the masonic Christmas parties were the best in town, unfortunately the masons were not so keen on me when I became an adult - don't expect any funny handshakes from me when we do eventualy meet.
I read with interest your item about the Zambia airways pilot who possesed a shrunken head. In the 1950s my uncle Tommy decided to leave Northern Rhodesia and go see the world, I don't think the fact that Arthur's dad was his first boss was a factor, My uncle spent many years travelling and working, including a spell in the jungles of South America. When he returned to Zambia he brought 2 shrunken heads back with him, to this day I can see those shrunken heads as clear as if they were right here in front of me now, I remember the long dark straggly hair, the mouth bound with string, the tiny size of the heads and the very clear and relatively large skin pores. My mom was so horrified by them that she threw them away, I wish I knew where they went as they are worth a small fortune these days. Today shrunken heads from South America can easily be bought on the open market, almost invariably they are fakes created using monkey heads. In the tribal art world there are many human heads for sale, popular examples include the mumified heads of tattooed Maoris, or engraved skulls from PNG. I should add that possesion of Native American relics (including South America) in an offence in some countries including the USA.

Happy birthday – young Arfa
.
Here’s wishing you all the very best in future years.
Elias,
You’re seldom wrong – but this time you’re right! Just ask Johnny Green. That ‘bush-chicken’ is, in fact, a francolin. We used to call them ‘bush-chickens’ as, once cooked, they have white flesh – like a chicken – but much more flavour.
With regard to your query about Freemasonry, I found a pamphlet advertising a video called ‘The Freemasons’, available in VHS or Betamax, at about 13 BP from:

Hi all!
This is my first post on the GNR message board (Yep, I have already slapped
my wrist).
Some of you know me and some of you may not, I run the ex-luanshya
website with Patrick Doyle.
The reason I am writing is that we are having a get together this Saturday
in London, a Luanshya/Zambia reunion, full details can be found on the ex-luanshya
website (www.ex-luanshya.com).
The location will be at Spice
Island which is located on the South bank of the Thames in London.
So if you are not doing anything on Saturday please try to come along, it is
very informal, we call it "a few beers".
All the best and hope to see a few of you there, all ages by the way!

I forgot to ask you about that Freemasonary book, do you have the Authors name or an ISBN number? I tried all the GNR book links and Amazon but couldnt trace it. I kept getting a message "try your local library"

You are probably right about repetetive stories. I think the cause of this is the aluminium pots and pans my mum used to use at home. Aluminium being one of the causes of Altzheimers disease.
Yes you are right about HTML codes. I can never remember them so I have been trying to find a way of entering them using just one key stroke. The closest I have come is 3 to start BOLD and 4 to close.

I am surprised you two havent crossed each other before. Kriss claims to be the worlds best "Backward Longjumper".

Keith, there you go with Heather's family tree of the Young Family. She is excellent with facts and figures and history, but even better with gossip and scandal. If you need to know who is sleeping with who's wife or husband. Who is getting divorced. The father of someones child. Heather will know or can find out. Just be careful of skeletons in your own cupboard, she will find those out on the way.

Did you measure the snake, or is that an "estimate"? If the latter, who estimated and how can we be sure of his/her accuracy? ;->
Elias,
Didn't you post that story already? By the way, the headmaster is waiting for you in his office. Something about screwing up your strong tags.
All,
We just added another 14 members to the GNR, so we're up to 544 and growing every day. The "Looking For..." page is also growing just about every day. It's mostly the new members who have added to that page, but existing members can log in and add names to that page as well. Eventually they will be indexed by the search engines and we hope many more people will renew acquaintances with old friends through the GNR.

Here is the run down on the Youngs:
Johnny, Caroline, Val and Lucy are siblings. Johnny married Lynn Parks, Caroline married Lindsay, Val married Gerhardus Coetzer who was killed in a car accident at Chisamba about 20 years ago and Lucy married John Meyer from Ndola. Johnny, Caroline and Lucy are still in Lusaka and I'm not sure where Val is (she was in Jo'burg and then moved back here a few years ago but I'm not sure if she is still here). Lucy used to post on this board some time back.
Danny is their cousin and he was in Zambia until about a year/18 months ago when I think he went back to South Africa.
The other Youngs, who are also cousins, are Keith and Eugene and their father is Rob. They are all based in Johannesburg although they run a Zambian transport operation. Rob was involved in Kansanshi when it was first opened.
Elias
Don't start posting things like that - I've already had Arthur asking whether I take things like snake-bite serum and a gun with me when I go on these trips. The answer - sometimes I do, but usually I forget. The only snakes I saw on my latest trip were two - one was dead, having been run over by a car and the other one was only about 15 inches long. Having said that - we had two snakes in our garden today - one, type unknown and the other a puffadder but neither of them were anything to sing or dance about. No photos because I didn't have my camera with me.
This was about the extent of the wildlife I saw on my trip:

Hi, we were talking about Caroline Young and Lindsey Pierce yesterday and whether or not a Danny Young could be related?
Even though Danny was from Ndola, I am told he now lives in Lusaka and works for a company who his family own, they are also Youngs. What the relationship between them is, I am not sure but anyway they are more than likely just another Young family and no relation to Caroline.
And anyway the only reason why I can still remember Danny is because when I was still a little chap attending Kansenji primary school and lived in Stanstead road in Ndola, we had a Bull Mastiff who unfortunately decided to bite him on a visit to my house after school. If I am correct the Ravensdales(sp?) lived opposite us then and as far as I know still live in Ndola.

Heather Chalcraft is very brave!
Heather you are very brave travelling into the wilderness of Zambia. Look at one of the dangerous things that happen in Serenje:-
-------------------------------------------------
Python swallows new-born Zambian baby
SERENJE, May 22: A python swallowed a baby minutes after it was born near the central Zambian town of Serenje, state television reported.
Heavily pregnant Joyce Mibenge was on her way to plough fields two kilometres (one mile) from her home when she went into labour, ZNBC reported yesterday. Halfway home, she was overwhelmed by labour pains and retreated into a nearby bush to rest.
"She gave birth there on her own. After a few moments when she had recovered enough to hold her baby she saw a happy python licking the legs of the baby with the rest already swallowed," ZNBC said.
The traumatised mibenge pulled herself to her feet, fled to her home and raised the alarm, but searching villagers were unable to find the snake. She did not even know whether she had had a boy or girl. (REUTERS)

BRASSO,
Sory Gary but Mr & Mrs Braidford will NOT be attending the Banbury bash, I am sure to regret it but there you are. We are seriously considering the one in Zambia next year, if we can possibly afford it, and if the doctors will allow me to go there. Malaria would be very bad for me, and I have already been warned off even thinking about going to Africa.
Regards to all,
Barribee.

Hi Linda H
I always remember a face and often names escape me, however on this occasion it was different ... no, the BCal office was a couple of doors from Turnbull Gibson and next door to this was a small doctor's surgery, then the alleyway to the public loo's (and a through way to Kingston's and the Square)and across from the alleyway was Apeco who sold duplicating machines etc then Grindlays Bank I think on the corner.
Alas I don't recall the little mushroom seller altho he must have popped into all the offices anyway.
When I was in Kitwe last year after such a long interval an awful lot was familiar and a lot had greatly changed. I was then cross with myself for having left it so long before I went back for a visit.
Stay well
Kris

Serenje is about 200 kilometres (about 125 miles) north of Mkushi (I have tried to scan a map for you but it is too detailed and therefore too big for the message board). I also didn't know about the falls until we went there. They are on a private farm which, I understand, used to belong to the Moffats (Robert (?) Moffat was the father-in-law of David Livingstone and was a missionary at Pandamatenga and it is the same family). The farm now belongs to some other missionaries.
Yes, George is the one who used to fly into Balovale (he told me plenty of stories about those trips). I have lost contact with him - the address I have is about 14 years old, but would also like to contact him again. I shall send you his address and maybe you can try to trace him from your side - easier than me trying to do it from here. and I'll ask around as well.
Elias
You were talking about Freemasons the other day. I have just been given a book called 'History of English Freemasonry in Zambia' published in 1970. It's as boring as hell, but gives all the information on the establishment of the lodges in Zambia (Luangwa Lodge in Broken Hill was the first in 1925). What is interesting is the names of the people involved and seeing how they fit into the picture of the community as it was in those days - the same names keep cropping up as I do more research, but this book also gives a lot of new names.

Thanks once again for the incredible photos you have posted for us to enjoy. I have come to realize that I missed seeing so much of this beautiful country when I lived there. We did a lot of camping and fishing, but it seems we must have concentrated in the same areas all the time. I feel like I am discovering Zambia all over again through the lens of your camera. Thanks for all that you do for the site and for our memories. You are a super star!

Hi Kris
Yes, your name has been familiar to me too, but could not place you. I think it gets to where we all think everyone's name is familiar after a while. Did you work in the building above Radio Limited in Kitwe? If so, do you remember the Zambian kid who came around selling mushrooms all the time? His name was Maxwell, and I was fascinated with his entrepreneurial skills. He should have been in school at his age, and he was so bright and talented. He had a lot of potential and I have often wondered how he ended up. Will give your regards to the Hintons.

Have a great reunion with them and please pass on my regards.

Heather I am sure you know Lindsay Pierce, he married Caroline Young(The one with the terrible temper). Caroline is Johnny and Lucy Young's sister, cousins of Ronnie Goveia. Lucy married John Meyer.
Keith, I cant remember what happened to the Brackenborough sisters. The last time I saw Carol she had been shot in the arm when Mike MacMahon went through a roadblock on the Kabwe road. I think her arm has been paralysed since. Linda taught at Mrs Punnett's nursery school in Roma. She stayed just behind us and married John ??????, a little chap from Birmingham.

EX Zambian, Born Ndola 1960;
went to Kansenji Primary School:- remember, teacher - Mrs Jelly(Cape Town) and 1 of the principals Mr. Fearby (spelling?). Left Zambia 1976.
Will be returning to Ndola, to stay in September would be nice to hear from very old friends and from people who might have known my parents; Maureen and Clifford. Were very involved in the swimming club.
Am also trying to find the whereabouts of Michelle Blyth. As far as I know she went to school in Lochgelly(spelling?) in Scotland, they left Zambia in the late 70's and we lost contact in the early 80's. The last I heard she was living in Grahamstown S.A.
Also interested to know what happened to
Linda & Carol Brackenborough.

Was just having a look at your Bash stats:
5 kg dry mealie meal? According to KK's government, 14 kg of mealie meal would feed one person for one month. If you extrapolate that, you need just over 17 kg to feed 110 people.
And please don't forget Rivonia Green Tomato Chutney which I am going to send - as good as Mrs Balls. And maybe even a container of Chibuku which is now marketed in tetrapacks and called Shake Shake. Or I could send it over like this:

George Grebesz was Zambia Airway's longest serving pilot. He started flying with them when they were still operating Beavers and was still working for them when they were put into liquidation in 1992/3. The last I heard he was living in Walton-on-Thames. Then beer bottles thrown at Australian players

George Grybz and his human skull
Does anyone remember George Grybz? He was one of Zambia Airways longest serving pilots and used to fly the DC10 on the Lusaka/New York flight.
George had a wierd sense of humour and always used to bring back something shocking or unusual. The strangest thing I have ever seen was a human head. Not a skull, but a preserved head complete with skin, hair, teeth but no eyes.
This thing was only the size of a human fist. George told us that he managed a few days off in South America on his rest days and bought this head in a market stall for about £10. Apparently human heads are cut of the body. The skull bones are carefully crushed or broken and removed together with the brain, tongue etc from the base of the neck. The hollow head is then filled with salt and left to cure. It shrinks really small and is stuffed with grass. Apparently this was really good business and there was no problem with supplies.
He brought this head back in his pilots case, which was just as well. Imagine the uproar if custome were searching his luggage and found a head.
If I remember right he kept this head on a bookshelf in his bedroom, which his servant refused to even enter.

Isn't life sweet, just love it when someone else wins,
and the Aussies get sort of done.(have to be sort of kind as my three Australian daughters might have a go at me)
yay for South Africa!!!!!!
when I was in NZ and watching the game.... South Africa against the Kiwis, I sat there amongst all these Kiwis yelling for their team, sadly South Africa lost that night, of course I got ribbed, but I took it in my stride at least it wasn't the Aussies beating the South Africans.....
tis truly "the game they play in heaven!!!!"
I must say this Banbury bash is looking to be a wonderful display of talent, of course coming from the best land in the world, where else but our beloved Northern Rhodesia/Zambia.......I am getting excited about the evening and I won't even be there, but you Gary seem to have perfected the art of organising ..WELL DONE!!!!!

N O R T H E R N E R S!
Yes, what a great rugger match that was at Johannesburg this afternoon. I was at Ealing Broadway having a couple of pints of cider at O'Neill's pub to watch the game. A couple of South Africans were there too, and we relished the victory after an Australian walked out when the Wallabies scored to tie, shouting "Orz-try-lia!". Yeah right, he missed the ending: "Seth-Efrika!" to you mate!
Ons vir jou, Suid-afrika!
It' OK when the Kiwis win. It is NOT OK when the Aussies do. It is a perfect world when the Bokke do!
Doug,
Thanks for the kind words about the hip-replacement. It is all a result of the motorbike accident, five years back. The hairline fracture in the acetabulum was predicted to become arthritic. Luckily, I am now in Nederland, the world's best place to be fore orthopaedic surgery. And Onze Lieuwe Vrou Gasthuis is almost as good as Groote Schuur! Apparently after the operation, I will no longer feel constant pain, which I have endured since that fateful day I was hit head-on by a Deadhead driving some crap old Mustang jalopy.

What a terrific tri-nations match between Australia and South Africa at Ellis Stadium in Joburg. I don't even like rugby but this was exciting. The Boks scored a winning try in the last seconds of the game to win 34 to 31, thus winning the Mandela Cup but the Tri-Nations was won by the All Blacks who weren't even there. Both Captains; Corne Krige and Georgie Gregan, were born in the same hospital in Lusaka according to the commentator.
I have met another ex-northener in Vryheid. His name is Chris Taylor and he runs a security company here. He was an engineer with Stewarts and Lloyds in Lusaka in 1970 and later moved to join Dallas Grobler who was farming 3000 acres under irrigation in Chisamba. He is 6 foot 8 inches or 2 metres tall which may jog some memories. Chris left Zambia in 1976 and farmed in Paulpietersburg for many years before moving into the security line. He is too busy too spend time on the internet, but if anybody remembers him and posts a message I will pass it on to him.
Dawie
Sorry to hear about the hip replacement op. My Dad had 2 such ops about 20 years ago and they were a great success. As medical science has advanced much further in the last 20 years so I am sure yours will also be a good success. Best Wishes!

M O T O N O R T H E R N E R S!
There was ONE cool thing about living in San Francsco in the 1980's and 1990's: the extant Café Racer cult. One day, my mate, Erik and I drove by the ZeitGeist pub at Duboce & Valencia. Erik was one of those blokes savvy about cool bikes, and he looked over at the ZeitGeist lineup and said in his slick San Francisco dialect: "Cool bar. Check out the bikes!" what a line-up: NOT a single Jap or Yank bike: all British, Italian, Czech, Russian, and various hyrbrid ratbike and streetfighters! After buying my next Norton, a 1971 red Norton Commando Fastbike, I was lined up at the ZeitGeist on a Friday night within a few weeks of that siting. What fun! What a raunchy, crazy, drugged out haze of a rockin' place that is! Today is still the same at the ZeitGeist. But up on Haight Street, there is another cool café racer rockin' bar: The Toranado. More of a Brit bike place; compared to the esoterica of the ZeitGeist. It was at the ZeitGeist that the YPG (Yellow Peril Gang: Jim, Steve, and myself on Arrest-me Yellow Ducati Superlights) hatched the San Francisco-to-La Paz Xmas Race back in 1993.
I am happy to see that I sparked off a conversation on the message board that links Rhodesiana with my passion: British bikes, and in particular NORTONS.
Thanks to all the Motonortherners who have revealed the names of our biking national heroes. We won't stress the Zambesi divide here in this context.
Am still in London, rocking out with friends. I might stay here until I need to return to Amsterdam, where I must go into hospital to begin the hip replacement. I will be at the Onze Lieuwe Vrou Gasthuis (hospital)---not the same one as the Prins Claus has been going to (that's the AMC). So don't confuse the flower delivery.
EURO TRASH RULES THE WAVES!

Elias I saw Gary Hocking race at the Kumalo track just outside Bulawayo in 1961.
Gary died December 22, 1962 when his car somersaulted during the last practice session of the Natal Grand Prix.
He certainly was a hero to a lot of kids.

Hilton, you are correct about Gary Hocking. He was a famous local hero. I had forgoten all about him until you mentioned him. He was a fantastic rider and I can remember the cheers and yells from the kids in the cinemas when they showed him on the newsreels winning by miles.
Is it true he was killed racing Lotus cars in South Africa?

BANBURY BASH - LIVE ENTERTAINMENT
For your entertainment by ex-Zambian musicians on the night we have:
CABARET by JOHN & KIM, with a selection of Southern and Central African songs, jokes and banter. Join in as they sing some nostalgic favourites, including "Agh Pleez Deddy", "The Liftgirl's Lament", "Who Killed Cock Robin ?", "Tiyende Pamodzi", and more. The hilariously funny "Zambian Magic Act" will also be performed, live on stage.
LIVE MUSIC for DANCING, with a selection of 50's, 60's, 70's and more recent popular numbers, by:
Thelma Holland (ex-Kalulushi) on vocals
Brian Geyser (ex-Lusaka) on vocals and lead guitar, featuring a set of Shadows favourites soloed by Brian
John Costopoulos (ex-Mufulira) on vocals and guitar
Mike Thomas (ex-Luanshya) on vocals
Kim Costopoulos (Durban) on vocals
Paudie Coughlan (ex-Mufulira) on rhythm guitar and keyboards
LapTop on computerised drums and bass
and featuring special guests:
Jamie Costopoulos on vocals (Jamie is John & Kim's 8 year old son)
and the GNR's own Tina Magee (ex-Lusaka) on backing vocals.
My thanks to all of these ex-Zambian musicians for agreeing to perform to provide entertainment for their ex-Zambian friends at the GNR's Banbury Bash. A special thanks to Brian Geyser for the loan of musical equipment on the night.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the founder and management team of the GNR - thanks to Dave Cooper, Heather Chalcraft, Craig Hartnett and Arthur Steevens. Thanks to everyone else helping in the background, and a huge special thanks to the host and organiser of the Banbury Bash, Mr. Gary Brassington.

I hope to be able to post the Bash attendee list nearer Bash date BUT if I do not have time I WILL be placing lists on each table on the nite of the event for U all to look at. Lots of new people from all around the globe at this one!
Myself and my co-conspirotors Paudie Coughlan & Brian Geyser are working avidly behind the scenes to make sure this event is as memorable evening/weekend as possible for ALL OF U, as it this is YOUR EVENT! Even our esteemed SARKYARTHUR has had a quiet time of it with this one - I think I have hastled him once so far for his professional advice! ---------------------------
Don't worry, am not a Nigerian Spammer. A friend of mine is travelling to Cape Town for 3 months at the end of August. Her husband is working offshore there. Are there any GNRers living near the President Hotel in Bantrey Bay (sp)? Josie has two children, one 4 yrs and the other 2. Josie is of Dutch parentage so think the lingo will not be a problem (she was brought up in Hull, Yorkshire - bit of a mixture)but she is feeling a bit apprehensive having never been to Africa before so was hoping that anyone reading this could possibly get in touch with me - will forward the details to her and could then rest assured that her welcome would be wonderful, friendly people for a cup of coffee and a chat.
Many thanks

Paudie
------
Thanks for the list of Muf attendees but note there are some people who either haven't confirmed or are missing:
Ian Page, what gives and get that sister of yours off the golf course for a weekend.
Johnny and Gill Broughton, Gill's sister and hubby?
Sparky, you're being very quiet.
Also:
Velda Waddell where are you?
Graham and Gill Pearson and your brothers, Gill, Charlie and Marcus Wrightson (plus your folks if they are in the UK).
Ian Heard, Stevie Ritchie? See Freddie's already confirmed.
Last but certainly not least, Mary McLean, who is not on e-mail but know that a few of you have her telephone number so start hassling!
REALLY wish I could be there but unfortunately am going to be slurping champagne at Dalhousie Castle in Edinburgh, it's my local. No the real reason is to see Karen, a good friend of mine, walking down the aisle - her better half has tried every trick in the book but the promise of a whole wedding cake she could scoff and an exotic island holiday seemed to win her over plus the fact she has threatened to take out a contract on my life if I am not there!! Her reasoning: "Gill, I have to have someone there that I like".

Dawid Cooper,
Wasn’t that Jim Redman? I doubt if it was Mike hailwood. My hero was Giacomo Agostini – he was the first racer to practise putting a bike down on its side, at a ton, then riding it like a sled ‘til it slowed down enough for him to step off unscathed!

N O R T H E R N E R S !
I am surprised I got no response whatsoever about my offer to digitise the maps of Chingola and Mufilira. I often hear disgruntled whingeing and whining from the non-Nkanans and non-Kitwesiders about how there is too much dominance from the Metropolis of The North over the satellite Copperbelt dorps!
All the old members have already seen the interactive map of Kitwe (circa 1962). Newcomers: make sure you download the WHIP! Plug-in, or you won't see it. If you have a rubbish computer; it will probably drag you down. Sorry.
I will start the digitising as soon as I acquire my new computer. But first, I must hop a ferry for a job interview in Derby (tomorrow).
Elias,
Actually I am not much of a Royal Enfield enthusiast. My interest is mostly because the bike is BRITISH (except those still made in India). I also have an interest in the bike because my dad rode one of the big ones, and because of the trend during the 1960's to fix them up to café racer style (see the Mike Clay book: THE CAFE RACER CULT).
My interest in bikes is ONLY if they are NOT multis. That means, thumpers (singles), twins, and triples. I am REALLY into café racer, ratbike, streetfigher types as well. My first biking experience was a Norton 750 Commando Roadster. I ended my biking career (before my motorbike accident in 1995) on a Ducati 900 Superlight. I once wrote up a biking story for a Finnish biker magazine back in 1993 about my wild mad race on my Ducati from San Francisco to La Paz (México) and back---wild, crazy fun. México is a wonderful country; I fell in love with it during that mad winter fortnight!
Now here's a biking question revelent to the GNR: Who was the Rhodesian champion rider of a Norton on the Isle of Man during the 1960's? (Or was it the 1950's?)
Tot kijk...
Groeten...

FREEMASONS
Can anyone tell me how does one join this secret society? I have been told that if you are a Freemason it is very easy to get a well paid political job, or a top policemans job or even to be a judge or a magistrate. Experience or qualifications are not always required and any mistakes will be covered discreetly.
I discovered this when a large building company based in Kitwe suddenly remembered that they had year end figures to submit. A huge amount of building materials in their yard had to be checked and counted. Bags of cement were easy, concrete blocks and bricks were even easier, roofing sheets....simple. But the Stores Manager was baffled when faced with three huge mountains of building sand, quarry dust and crushed stone and had no idea how to estimate the tonnage.
After a sleepless night he had a brainwave and hired a twenty ton truck and an excavator from me. It was simple the excavator filled up the truck, the driver drove a few yards away and dumped his load returning for more. All he had to do now was multiply each trip by 20 and that gave him the tonnage. This carried on nonstop for a few days and he got some very accurate figures.
Unfortunately the cost of equipment hire, overtime and scarce diesel was horrendous. Only after I was paid did I tell him that a quantity surveyor could have worked it for him in 10 minutes or he could have used the formula for a cone and worked it out himself in little while.
I was told later by Barry Gough (the motorcycle scrambler) who worked there in the garage that the top boss was a Freemason who never said a word about the cost.
Any advise will be welcome. I need a well paid job with little or no work.

Vivienne et al (again)
Can't tell you much about the Nurses' Association Party apart from the photo was displayed in the November 1955 issue and the fete was held in the grounds of the Nkana Hospital. "The fete was to raise funds for the Florence Nightingale flats which had been built out of funds raised by the association and affiliated bodies. That afternoon £800 was raised. The highlight of the afternoon was the fancy dress parade".
And less of the "Sir" please - just Sark will do fine, after all this is the kid that lived at the bottom of Central Street once - not far from the sewerage works. (Although I did live on 15th Avenue for a time). And yes I do love Northern Rhodesia. Thanks should go to all the people that lend or donate material to the GNR and who without none of this would be seen.
And I thought I'd done more of the Rhokana Reviews than I first said - I have scanned 28 issues to date. This has proved a difficult task as the magazines are mostly 50 years old or more, and handling and scanning these precious pages needs great care. On top of that some of them are in quite bad condition but thankfully only a few. Scanning from print also presents technical problems which I wont go into here.
I nearly gave up in May - my first six scanned magazines went down the tubes when my computer decided to have a bad crash. The day before I thought about backing them all up to Cd. Sods law. It took me another month to get over it.
Now you mentioned the McCallum boys - take a look at this - are these the same brothers in this photo?

This photograph was taken from the 1975 Diggers North American Tour Brochure although the photo is dated 1966. The brochure was lent to me by Sweetie Moira Fenwick together with another dated 1975 issued for the Tour of West Germany. These brochures are both being scanned onto Cd at the moment. More photos for the board will follow later.
Below are a few more photos without any names of the people in them, this is a tiny selection from the hundreds I have up to now. If anyone can see themselves here or recognise anyone else please yell.

All around 1954/55

The Babes in Wood panto was held at Mindola Dam. Note how far ahead the Metropolis of the North was in the international fashion stakes - a mini skirts in 1955 ! London eat your heart out.
One for Diane Horton

Arthur
Now for another fashionable girl.

One of Nkana's best known personalities has left the 'camp'. But not for long for Marianne Griffiths will be back after a year's study of beauty culture and hairdressing at Mrs. Lawrence's School of Hairdressing in London.
After eight years in the drawing office as a tracer then in the dark-room, Marianne decided she would, after all, turn her hobby into a vocation. Not one for half measures, she immediately booked a course with London's leading instructor and on March 19 she flew from Ndola.
Daughter of the late Norman 'Jock' Griffiths and Mrs. Marion Griffiths, she was born at 157-6th Street, Nkana, and had the distinction of being the first Nkana-born child to attend the Frederick Knapp School where she started in 1936.
From this school she went (in 1939) to the Beit School for Girls at Choma and after three or four years there, to the Broken Hill Convent leaving in 1947 to take a job in the drawing office.
Marianne's sporting interests were mainly hockey and softball. At hockey she represented both Northern Rhodesia and All-Rhodesia gaining her place in the Northern Rhodesia side for the first time in 1951. The next year and in 1953 she played for the Territory and Rhodesia and last year for Northern Rhodesia.
At softball she excelled and played for the first Northern Rhodesia side to be picked - that was in 1954. Her playing positions were pitcher and left outfield. She can, too, give a creditable performance with the bat.
When she was five years old Marianne was given a cut-down set of golf clubs. However, her interest in golf was spasmodic and her only claim to fame on the links was that, at the age of 18, she won a 'promising beginners' competition!
Perhaps another reason for Marianne's 'fame' was her great variety of transport. From her first two-wheel bicycle at the age of three and other cycles as she grew older, Marianne graduated to a Corgi motor scooter, an M.G., a Jaguar and then back to a bicycle. Constant companion in the past few years has been Kulu, a Scottie bitch Marianne was given in Cape Town some time ago. Whether motoring or cycling Kulu had a 'seat' even if it was on the carrier of her mistress' bicycle.
In July this year Marianne will be joined in London by her mother. They will tour the Continent and return to Northern Rhodesia together
The Rhokana Review - 1955
Maz I have tracked down the Review that details your trip to Capetown in your Yellow MG.
That is for another day.
To non Nkana Kitweans - Heather will be back from her trip up the creek shortly to give you some brilliant wildlife photos and apply a little balance to this website.
I'm expecting a good chameleon shot.
Gary, Paudie - don't know what you were both worried about - I'd have sent for Ada Cantrell to sort them out with a box of matches and a hanful of stones. There would have been no wedding reception and Johnny would have has his small camp fire.

BANBURY ACCOMMODATION
As the numbers attending the Banbury Bash increase on a daily basis (there are now only 20-odd places left), accommodation in central Banbury is becoming scarce.
The following link includes details of accommodation within a 10-mile radius of central Banbury. Most of the accommodation in central Banbury was included on Gary Brassington's original list, and is likely full by now, due to the large number of attendees for the Banbury Bash.
Note that The Cartwright Arms at Aynho (close to Kings Sutton) has 20 rooms. You need to check availablity and re-check prices with the establishments concerned(acknowledgements to The Vintage MotorCycle Club for the link)
Other Banbury Accommodation
There is also a motel at the motorway services at Junction 10 (Cherwell Valley Services) on the M40, approx 10 miles from Banbury.

Gary that guy who is getting married missed the chance of a life time he could have said to his intended darling we canot get married on the 21st as a bunch of alcholics have taken over the village hall and they get violent when deprived of drink, lets postpone it for about 10 years he will regret it for the rest of his life, but if we had got there and not known of the cancellation we would have had our party in the middle of the main street in your village complete with a brai and maybe a campfire, but alls well that ends well, is the golf club well insured? BANBURY BASHES - URGENT IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

REVISED VENUE LOCATION IS AS BELOW:
BANBURY GOLF CENTRE, AYHNO ROAD (B4100 ADDERBURY TO AYHNO ROAD), ADDERBURY, NEAR BANBURY, OX17 3NT. TEL: 01295 810419
WEB SITE: www.banburygolfcentre.co.uk (WEB SITE SHOWS ROUTE MAPS AND LOCATION). THE GOLF CLUB IS ABOUT 1/4 MILE OUTSIDE KINGS SUTTON VILLAGE.

U would not believe how I have aged in the last 4 hours since I was told this bad news. Location is superb - overlooks golf course and wide open countryside. The facilities are also superb - in fact better than the village hall. If anyone wants to discuss please call me. I hope I can "relax" again now. I apologise to everyone for any inconvenience caused by the change in venue but matter was unfortunately out of my control. THE PARTY STILL GOES ON!!!!

Sorry don't know what happened - the message should read as follows:-

Lovely to be recognised - for the life of me I can't begin to imagine what I was doing at the Nursing Association Party, but if the MacCallum boys were there, then Aunty Kitty would have been there and then my mom would have been there too, and that must be why I was there! What we were looking at must have long since been forgotten, as was this photograph. By the way I am sure one of the faces you were looking at and could not remember the name will be Marion Powell as I recognised her right at the back of the picture.
Laurie and Andrew's wedding plans are progressing at a rate of knots (I have always wondered just what that phrase means), but whether we will all survive the plans, never mind the wedding, is another story. Laurie will be devastated if the Martini's are not there in December!
Arthur
You are the best - your "mission" with the Rhokana Reviews will be better than anything to come out of "Camelot" and you should henceforth be known as "Sir Arthur of the Great North Road". You are going to make so many of us ecstatic on completion of the CD's and I am sure we will all want to order them. Thanks for all your time and trouble and love for Northern Rhodesia.

Brian - thanks for your phone call. Nice to talk to U and had a good laugh about old times. Look forward to more at the Bash. Confirm have added U and Celia to list, and now numbers attending are now up to 125.
Those staying at Banbury House Hotel & elsewhere - spoke to Claire in Reservations - no more room at the inn. Also strongly advised that the bar remain open well after midnight - she has warned the bar staff to be ready for a "long nite". Anna the S African Man. Dir. has disappeared to N Ireland to get well out of the way of U lot - she took a caravan so presume she is planning an extended vacation in Ireland to be as far away from 150 N Rhodesians. Hee hee.

With regard to the Banbury Bash - it sounds too wonderful for words and I'm sick with jealousy thinking of all of you getting together and having an unbelievable time. Unfortunately with our Rand at about 16 to Pound, I don't think I'll be traveling further than Pofadder anytime soon! But hopefully we'll all be able to meet next year on 'home' ground!
As for my son, they lasted precisely three weeks in Ireland! I'd like to think that it was his African blood calling him home but in fact they returned because the authorities would only issue his wife with a three month visitor's visa, so it all seemed a bit pointless. Needless to say, I'm delighted to have them back!
I also wanted to mention, for those who remember her, that Madeline le Febvre passed away last month. (The family wasn't in Kitwe for very long - her father was manager of the Nkana Hotel, and she attended St John's Convent. She married a Scots chap, David Fisher, and they lived in East London for a time before moving to Port Elizabeth.) Both she and her younger sister Simone, had cancer and while Simone appears to be doing well now, Madeline lost her battle with it after suffering greatly for a long while.

Vivienne et al
Vivienne brilliant!
There are so many of these photos in the Rhokana Reviews that it would be impossible for me to put them all on the GNR, which is unfortunate as I know so many of you are going to be in them. So having found yourself Vivienne in that one was a bonus for me as well. I spoke to Des today and although that is his Dad, it was not his Mum and neither was Des the sprog. (I thought the baby was a little short).
A lot of the photos have captions with the names of all the people in the shot but many more do not - and even if the names are given it is not neccessarily the same people who have the same names on the GNR (like Mr Cooper pointed out when I got it wrong with the Coopers).
In the batch I posted for Guy Hobbs there is also Denise Horton's sister (Brenda Wellbeloved), I think in the second photo along. Perhaps Denise will confirm this.
Talking of names I did see one in the Reviews which was a little different - a Mrs Pine-Coffin !
I have scanned 18 full copies of the Reviews to date (six months work) and have probably as much to do again before I get all the Reviews in Peter Hill's collection done. Guy Hobbs also has kindly offered a further quantity to scan which will hopefully give us all a near complete set of every magazine issued on a Cd which will be then available to you all one day with the many thousands of photos and articles to look through. That is one of my missions here.
Lynthia it's probably best that if you intend to look at the GNR you always have your tool kit handy. What about combining a trip to the Banbury Bash and taking in Ireland which would be so near? Your boy still in Dublin?
Ken, June & Craig
Thanks for the info on the plane - I also have some photos from the gliding club in Nkana which I will post shortly.

Imagine my delight on opening the photograph you posted on the 9th August for Des Kenny (which is actually called nursing association party)to find myself smack dab right in the middle of it (I am the girl holding what looks like a doll in my hand)and the two boys in the very front row with the hats on are the two McCallum boys who played rugby for the Springboks, Ian and Roy.
Although that one wasn't intended to be, it was very much for me as well.

Gordon Garlick/Hornby Street
Gordon you mentioned some time ago that a street in Lusaka was named after your pioneering family. It has bothered me for some time but after Heather posted those pictures of Grasmere Farm on the Mumbwa Road, I've got it now.
The former Hornby Street ran from Cairo Road across Livingstone Road and ended at Stanley Road, it must have been the original road to the Hornby Farm. It is now the Mumbwa Road.
What a pity the street names were changed.

Garry (extra R as I am upset)
No directions from Morgan's Orchard - don't you want us there?!!!!!! Not even a mention of the best pub in the village!!! Also would be grateful for a phone number of a very reliable taxi service in King's Sutton. Only kidding, we are very good at finding our way to places - we go around in every diminishing circles and you know what happens then. A few fights on the way also occur!!!! It's all great fun - usually a divorce pending by the time we arrive, all hot and bothered, we call it an experience!!!!
Lots of love

Hi Folks.
Can anyone help Gayle Nixon?
Please read her posting from the Luanshya site.
Neil.
Hello! I was recommended this site by a chap called Jim Meyer, who saw an article in an Aberdeen (Scotland) newspaper publicising my forthcoming participation in a conservation project in Kafue National Park. The expedition is being run by Greenforce, a British non-profit organisation. As part of a team of 14 volunteer researchers I will be living and working on location in the park, conducting a variety of surveying and research work on behalf of the Zambian Wildlife Authority(ZAWA) for 10 weeks, starting in October. In particular we will be producing species inventories, population estimates, and monitoring the destructive diet prefences of the local elephants. As Africa's largest, yet least explored park (partly due to the terrible road conditions), this work is essential to allow the authorities to make better informed decisions about the management of the park.
Participation in this venture requires substantial fundraising (£2550 fee, flights, insurance, inoculations & kit). I am currently undertaking a number of activities, including car boot sales, writing to trusts, and an 84-mile sponsored walk. I wonder if anyone has any advice they could offer, or if anyone would care to support me in this expedition. Any contact is gratefully received! I can be contacted via this site, on my own email address (gaylenixon@hotmail.com) or through the Greenforce forum at (www.greenforce.org). Many thanks in anticipation!
Gayle Nixon.

I really do wish you would give me some kind of advance warning when you’re going to post things like that – then I could at least be prepared and bring my little tool box to work to do some ‘running repairs’ to the war paint! Thanks anyway – it certainly brings back wonderful memories of those magical childhood Christmas’s!
I remember one in particular, that didn’t have a very happy ending for me. During the days preceding the 25th December, I decided to paint a mural in my bedroom, of a fireplace and chimney, with stockings hanging from the mantlepiece, sprigs of holly, etc. etc. Knowing that I’d never be allowed to actually paint it on the wall, I stuck sheets of paper together and completed my life-sized master piece. However, when I came to stick the thing up on the wall, I had run out of sellotape, and as it was Christmas Eve, there was no way I could get more before Santa arrived, so I pasted it up with Vaseline. It really looked very impressive and I was quite proud of my handiwork. However, when I eventually had to take it down, I was left with this thick, greasy layer of gunge over the entire wall which I then proceeded to clean off with newspaper – what a disaster! The end result was that my entire room had to be repainted, and suffice to say that I do not remember that particular Christmas as being filled with goodwill towards me!
Am looking forward to whatever it is that you've got up your sleeve for me next!

Hi Arthur
Wendy and I were very good friends. She taught me to run fast! The Edwards family lived very close to us. I remember Wendy's brothers Ronnie and Peter.
Wendy and I danced with the Wellbeloved sisters, Jane Henderson, etc. Great fun. Still got a my old tap shoes.
Clive and I sadly wont be at the bash as hoped. We were given tickets to Sabah and Sarwak (Borneo) and I've always wanted to climb Mt Kinabulu and visit the Oran Utang rehab centre in Sepilok so we're off there on 1st October. Can't afford to fly to UK first. I think my sister-in-law, Elaine is going though. I suggested Gary sends her a "be there or else" message.
Heather should be coming with me to take some of her amazing photos. I'm not a wiz with the camera.
Sounds as if the Bash is going to be a real success and I'm looking forward to seeing the photographic evidence!

Howdy Campers
Moi Moo Fivecows here checking in after about 6 weeks away from the great GNR! Got back from France in one piece glad to say, but don't want to see a canal or lock or boat or barge for some while! Will miss the wine, cheese, fresh tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes, croissants, baguettes, friendly people, etc etc. Got a nice tan and brown legs though, not frogs legs, brown legs I said! Also, no offer higher than fivecows, so had to come back to wet and windy England and the GNR!
Haven't caught up with all the gossip on site yet, been too busy trying to obtain gainful employment, but glad to see the preparations for the next bash in UK are still on a roll. Gary you are a star and fantastic that soooooo many people are attending, I guess they just had to give in as you are like a terrior! Can’t wait to see you all, especially my oldest partner in crime, don’t mean oldest, I mean partner in crime who goes back the furthest, Linda Dore-Hayes. Oh you know what I mean, it will be just…... great!

N O R T H E R N E R S !
I would love to extend a hearty welcome to all the newcomers to the Great North Road website. I notice there has been a flurry of new members.
I notice that there is one particular member recently who has residency from time spent in Malawi/Nyasaland. For those of us from the Federation period, you will fondly remember our partner country to the east; especially if it concerns places like Monkey Bay! Perhaps Anita Bachmann, the new member with such experience from Nyasaland can tell us a little of what life was like in Nyasaland?
This is also a reminder that the Message Board is NOT ALL what emcompasses the Great North Road website. This is a suite of pages, much like the chapters of a book. If you are only using the Message Board, you are only using ONE chapter of a vast tome. Go explore the other areas of the site. And if you have suggestions for improvement, then speak up!
By the way, for those of you lucky enough to have viewed the interactive map of Kitwe... I am planning on creating a similar map for Mufilira and Chingola. I have the same original hardcopy of Muf and Chingola from the same source from which came the Kitwe map. This project is long-term and will take many months. The computer will be a high-end graphics-capable machine which can run powerful and complex computer programmes such as AutoCAD and Autodesk VIZ (previously named 3D Studio VIZ). You should know this software, a number of items from the GNR were created using this expensive and top-notch software from Autodesk (www.autodesk.com and www.discreet.com).
Thanks for continuing to make the Great North Road a grand success!
Tot ziens.
Groeten...

Now, how did I spell Elias Greginappropriateprpoppollouspippee? I hope that's correct.. Luv ya, Eloise.. oops.. Elia. Hello!!

I thank you all for the compliment and praise bestowed upon me for the up and comming Banbury Bash. IT WAS FOR ALL THOSE NORTHERNERS ACROSS THE UK & GLOBE, that I agreed to arrange this one (with some arm twisting from certain people) and it has been a pleasue, challenge & total delight for me and the kids. Special thanks too must go to Brian Geyser, Paudie Coughlan, Thelma Holland, my daughter Natasha (who persuaded me to carry on with the Bash during depressing personal family circumstances), my son Scott, Des Kenny, Fiona Gayther, Graham Nelson and so many others whom have been a tremendous source of support and encouragement throughout! As they say "It'll be alright on the nite (I hope)!" Thank U all for allowing me the honour of arranging this little party.

ALL RISE PLEASE
Congratulations on what appears to be assured as the greatest offline organisation success in the history of the Great North Road website!
Many thanks to the organiser of the Banbury event, Mr. Brassington. And my heartfelt and sincere thanks to everyone else who has helped in this planning as well!
It never ceases to amaze me that those silly nights scrabbling about with HTML code in that tiny little clapboard room in the Sunnyside back in 1996 would result in 150 Northern Rhodesians from around the world would be getting together outside of Oxford, England to celebrate their common bonds and heritage!

Names Directory Update
OK, I've put back the adding and editing forms for the Names Directory and I hope that this time they will stay up for good.
Important Note
If you were one of half a dozen or so people who added their entries or the other half dozen or so people who updated their entries in the last few days, then please log in and look over your entry as it is now. The problem that needed fixing involved any fields that have apostrophes or single quotation marks ( ' ) or double quotation marks ( " ) in them. These characters were causing problems that might have caused your entry to have words like "didn\'t" (note the back slash) in it, or might have caused your entry to be truncated (which would have happened if you tried to use double quotation marks). These problems have now been fixed.

Re copper ingot (or Katanga cross), the one that you produced an illustration of is a particularly fine example, the normal variety was cast in sand and used as currency. At about the time when Gore-Browne was mapping the Northern boundary one of these would buy him 5 or 6 chickens, two lengths of good cloth, three or four kilos of rubber or six axes. The finer example shown by you were very clearly a sign of wealth and for centuries formed part of bridewealth payments.
I buy old ones from time to time but am regularly offered more recent ones made to look old by fakers - there are huge workshops in the Congo flooding the West with all kinds of fake African art. Just for general information some of you may be interested to know that fake African art is now being produced in places such as the Phillipines.

BRITISH COMMONWEALTH PILOT TRAINING ......
The Noorduyn Company, under license started manufacturing the Harvard in January 1940 and made 2557.
The Havard MK 4s was built by the Canadian Car and Foundry Company. A total of 555 were built in the earlt 1950's.
Many British Commonwealth Air Forces flew various varients of the Harvard including the Royal Rhodesian Air Force and the SAAF.
The Harvard continues to be a nostalgic favourite at air shows throughout the world.

Arthur:
The old photo of the airplane:
According to my husband Al, it is a "Harvard" AT6, also known as "The Texan" it is North American Aviation built.
During WW2 these planes were sent to all allied countries for advanced training purposes and also used in South Africa for Meteorological observations. If this is the North American AT-6 (Harvard to the Brits) then there are many still flying. Ex USAAF pilots collect them and belong to a flying club. This airplane was built in El Segundo, Aircraft factory at Los Angeles Airport, not far from our neighborhood.

THE FIRST DAY AT BOARDING SCHOOL ........
I watched from the Porters Lodge as the familiar blue Volkswagen Beetle, chased by a swirling plume of dust disappeared round a bend in the road. The dust settled lazily onto the road and surrouinding bush.I turned and with the weight of the world on my shoulders walked slowly towards the dormitory that was to be my home with forty other boys for the next five years.
Dad and Nana Mees drove me down from Lusaka to St Stephen's College, Balla Balla in Southern Rhodesia arriving there around noon on Sunday, February 14,1960.
On arrival we were ushered into Mr. Fuller's study, he was the headmaster, and as he sucked on his pipe and blew the sweet smelling blue smoke towards the white ceiling, assured me that a bright future lay ahead .After a quick tour of the college and seeing the dormitory where I was to stay we walked back to the Porters Lodge and said our farewells. Nana gave me a kiss and a warm hug while Dad shock my hand and wished me well. God forbid that this worldly thirteen year old be caught giving his Dad a kiss.
After what seemed an eternity and a rush of thoughts that raced through my mind as to how I would survive , I gingerly opened the door and walked halfway down the dormitory to the bed where my metal trunk and brown suitcase with Union Castle stickers were waiting for me.
I started to unpack and noticed three or four other boys who were destined for the same period of incarceration as myself talking in muted tones at the far end of the dormitory. As the afternoon wore on, the dormitory filled and the noise level started to rise as forty young boys staked out their beds.
My feeling of abandonment was soon over when I realised that there were a good number of guys from Lusaka. Rob Martin who was to become my best friend, Paul Guttman whose father had sold me my first bike,Chistopher Pead who had attended Woodlands School with me, Allan Hutt and Chris Forbes all started with me on the journey of being a boarder.
When the lights went out and I was enveloped by darkness and listening to the new sounds of the night and with a slight twinge of homesickness, I fell asleep with the comfort of knowing that I was surrounded by so many good friends from home.

Northerners !
Trish my good wife took me along tonight to the supermarket for an hour or two of comatose relaxation so I could carry the bags to the car afterwards (It aint Africa here).
Then I hear Jingle Bells music being played ! and it's Christmas ! So just to make sure we're not all left behind at the GNR ...
One for Lynthia Nadauld and no bursting into tears pleeeese.

Lynthia - I remember you posting a message about this event some time ago - nearer the time I will post some of the photos taken there a few years ago.
And since it's now officially Christmas here's a few presents to open.

One for Gordon Garlick

One for Ada Cantrell

One for David Gray
Some for Guy Hobbs

Guy - I know you read this board and you send me email and even we talked on the phone - is it not about time you posted a little message or two here? You also got more than prezzies than the others cos you know I want to borrow something from you.
One also for that scally Des Kenny

Des this is the photo I mentioned to you recently with your Mum and Dad in it and it's taken me ages to find again. I take it that's you sat on your Mum's lap in the prissy outfit. Were you supposed to be a girl? You don't look like one now.
Some for the miners

I always wondered how they did that!
One for Marilyn Noall

Marilyn was Wendy Edwards your best pal?
One for me or maybe two..

Now Marilyn please splain why are you holding your head like that - Wendy's only telling you that she's just spotted some boy running your way. Wendy seems a very nice girl too and her name seems to be familiar to me.
Have you booked your flight to blighty and the Banbury Bash?
Well that's Christmas over and done with for another year.
All images taken from various Rhokana Reviews 1950's
Easter
I had two early Easter Eggs given to me recently (aka plastic bag with photos in)
These were donated by two old codgers who are suffering badly from the altz syndrome so can't remember where these places were or the significance they had in their lives.
Perhaps some of you may recognise these places still. Not all Northern Rhodesia but should still be interesting.

Adderley Street Capetown - Charlie are these buildings still standing?

City Hall Durban

Bulawayo City Hall

Main Post Office - Johannesburg
One of the old guys was a pilot and was stationed at RAF Moffat in Gwelo Southern Rhodesia. I have numerous photos of that town in the early 1940's and some taken at the station itself. If there are any old codgers still alive that were stationed or lived there let me know and I will let you have a few stunning photos taken around that dorp.
The other old guy also claims to have been a pilot but I have my doubts - he produced this photo as evidence but couldn't tell me what sort of plane it wwas and who's airforce it belonged to - yeah a pilot I'm sure.

- it looks SA to me - anyone any ideas?
I think he was just a pommy tourist as he also had a bagfull of these which should bring back a memory or two.

I like the one that informs him his crankshaft is "oval and rough" I don't know how far he was expecting to go before the next garage.
Richards Bay Hotel seems to have got a mention or two on the GNR in the past - must have been a good fishing spot.
He also stopped here

And finally made an exit from Northern Rhodesia here -

Sakania - my map shows this as possibly the Congo but other mentions are made as if it is in Zambia - Heather any answers?
Well thats it for now - what comes after Easter - summer ?
Gary - Elais can't count - he forgot he said before he doesn't drink - take 1 off the drinkers list - you can also give me his pork chop as they aren't allowed to eat pig.
You also forgot to mention to all these prospective Banbury Bash attendees that if their name is not in the GNR Names Directory by the night of the bash they don't get in and also all deposits are non-refundable.
Des Kenny has been appointed the GNR bouncer to make sure nobody slips through the net.
Craig is still in the frame so make sure you have a spare keg of Guinness

ELIAS !!!!!!!
NOT ALL 110 ATTENDEES ARE FELLAS!!!!! I have not come across many women that drink beer all nite either. There are about 46 men therefore 480 divided by 46 = 10.434 bottles per fella!!!! I personally prefer a good malt whisky all nite or tiquila, salt & slices of lemon. Hee Hee.
52 bottles wine divided by 47 women = 1.10 bottles wine per woman.
There will also be a paying bar available for those whom wish to consume vodkas, gin, alco pops, traditional English bitters, European lager etc. But this is being run as a service if attendees require additional extra sustinance!!!!!!

The wizard confessed to practising witchcraft for 52 years and having sex with women in their sleep throughout the period.
In his confession to the magistrate's court, the man stated that he had kept a traditional satellite, "ilomba" and a traditional jet which he travelled with around the country, sleeping with women in the night.

WANTED
Urgently required. One traditional "ILOMBA". Must be in good condition and capable of traveling long distances.

GARRY, Your calculations are wrong!!
Garry, this is urgent. Please get Heather or Peter Dielesen to audit your figures. If I divide 480 bottles of beer by 110 attendees I get 4.8 bottles per person.
I have subtracted the prodigous beer drinker Gill Main who is absent and added Tina Magee and Linda Hayes to try and balance up, but still 4.8 bottles doesnt seem right.

After our chat yesterday, by my calculations there are now over 110 people confirmed for the Banbury Bash.
Maybe it's only fair to warn the many UK and overseas people "still thinking about it" that although the cut-off date for confirmations is 20th August,it is now likely that the numbers limit of 150 attendees max could be reached before that date.
I'm just glad that I won't be one of the poor sods that misses the biggest GNR Bash to date because of leaving it too late to confirm attendance and send in a cheque.

Have I told you lately that I love you? Thanks sooo much - Karen (my friend who is getting married at the same time as the Banbury Bash) kindly sent me an email, all 9833K's of it, used to be a lot of money in Zambia at one time - maybe I can use this as an excuse to come to the Bash instead (no, would never do that as I adore her). She sends from work so will have a quiet ear in her "shell-like".
Once again, thankyou for the very prompt advice - if I had tried once more, would have started to fiddle around with everything and totally wrecked the computer, either by changing settings etc., or giving the screen a "bunch of fives".

Complaint for Heather and her Photos
Heather can you not show photos of young looking, fit, slim 56 year old men with full heads of hair and rather show photos of us normal, fat, obese, bald, wrinkled, unhealthy, decrepid old men.
----------------------------------------------
Apart from my complaint Heather, your picture of Chilanga Cement reminded of a time when there was a terrible shortage of cement and distribution was rationed. I had a permit to collect up to 400 bags at a time as I was delivering cement to the ZCCM in Kitwe.
I had a very good driver called John who I trusted with a huge 50 ton truck. He was an excellent driver who also had a network of rogues who could supply me with scarce tyres, batteries and spare parts. I paid him well but often wondered how he afforded to buy one taxi then another one.
Until one day I received a call from an Irishman seconded to Chilanga Cement which clarified everything. The next time John went to collect cement. I was at Connor's office where we could see the queue of trucks waiting to be loaded. John's turn came and 500 bags were loaded instead of 400. Now just outside Chilanga Township is a little cluster of Indian shops. John stopped there offloaded 100 bags and went on his way to Kitwe. The shopkeeper was buying the cement from John who paid off the Chilanga Cement loaders, accounts staff and the gate checkers.
What annoyed me most was that I had bought cement myself from the shopkeeper at blackmarket prices when I was desperately short.

Hi all choir lovers on the South Coast, South Africa.
The Welsh Male Voice Choir of South Africa (Green jackets) are singing at the Village of Happiness in Margate on Saturday evening - please find out where to buy tickets and come along. The age group of the members is between 50 - 60 so don't think of them as "old men"!
There are about ten ex Northerners in the choir.
Do remember that they were invited to sing at the Royal Albert Hall in London two years ago - so are definitely worth listening to. They are singing at a church service in Margate on the Sunday - before we head back to Johannesburg.
It's going to be a great evening - hope to see you there.

Recent Site Updates:
August 8th, 2002:- Several significant updates to the Names Directory, including:
- The form for new members to add themselves to the Directory is back after a four-month leave of absence. We have half a dozen or so new members already (and I am working on ways of highlighting new members). Please spread the word, and if you're an existing member who is thinking of ditching your old entry and creating a new one, please read on.
- Existing members can finally edit their entries, which includes the ability to change your password to something more memorable. All you need to do is log in with your user ID and password and you can update any details that need updating, or correct those spelling mistakes you made. (And if you really hate having your maiden name displayed when you post messages, you can fix that too.) Forgotten your password? Never were able to remember it? Read on.
- If you have lost or forgotten your password, all you need to do is enter your e-mail address into the password recovery form and it will be sent to you. The e-mail address you enter must be the one in your Directory entry. If you no longer have access to your original e-mail address and you need to update your entry, please contact me. Please do not simply try and make a new entry.
- We have had requests over time to make some improvements to the way the Directory works. These changes are ongoing, but we have now implemented two of them. The first is that the towns or cities that people used to live in in Northern Rhodesia or Zambia are now displayed in the list of names on the left of the screen. This makes it easier to find people who used to live in the same place or places that you did.
- The second implemented request is a list of "missing" people that are being sought, which we are calling the "Looking For..." page. The great thing about this page is that you control it. If you are looking for someone, just log in to edit your Directory entry and enter the names of the people for whom you are looking in the so-noted space at the bottom of the screen. These names will automatically show up on the "Looking For..." page.
- I have also made a few cosmetic changes to the look of the Directory which I hope will make it easier to use. We also have long-term plans for a complete redesign.

N O R T H E R N E R S !!!
Another historic milestone in the development of the Great North Road website has been occurring in the last few days here in the world's most free city: Amsterdam!
Back in web prehistory (1996), a few intrepid Northern Rhodesians banded together and out of a tiny little bedroom in San Francisco's Sunnyside (oxymoron) district,I combined them together into what became the Great North Road.
Over the years I have slowly met up with some of these original founding members of this wonderful website. Most recently, this has been Mr. Robert Retamal in southern California.
This month, Peter Dielissen, originally of Den Haag, Nederland, Zambia, Yukon, and now of Fredericton, New Brunswick (in beautiful and one of my favourite countries: Canada!) has come to Amsterdam and we've met up!
We've had great fun at old pubs dating from the 17th century, and huge 240-seat 24 hour Internet cafes in this wonderful place.
Pete's a great guy! Like Glen Drake and myself, he too has a passion for great motorbikes! I think he told me he has Douglas and Vincent Black Shadow under his belt! With my Norton and Ducati portfolio, and Glen's incredible mob of Bevel-headed Ducati's, that makes me feel like the GNR was all worth it!
Thanks Pete! I now have a mate in one of my favourite places in the world: the Maritime provinces of Canada!
Tot ziens.
Groeten...

My apologies for the three hours that the Names Directory and the message board posting facility were down. I have just proved my lack of perfection mentioned in my previous message below. While working on setting up a facility for people to edit their Names Directory entries, I accidentally wiped out the whole Names Directory database. Fortunately the one thing I did right was make back ups, and everything is working again.
I'll have an announcement shortly with respect to the work I've been doing.

Viruses Again
I have had a rash of people e-mailing me in the last couple of days telling me that they have received a message with an attachment from me, or that I have sent them a virus.
Please familiarise yourself with the information on the Klez.H worm (aka virus). Just because it appears that the virus apparently came from xxx@yyy.zzz does not mean that the person who owns the e-mail address xxx@yyy.zzz is infected. To quote from the information provided by Trend Micro:"Similar to the other KLEZ variants, this worm can change or spoof the original email address in the FROM: field. It obtains the email addresses that it places in the FROM: field from the infected user's address book. This causes a non-infected user to appear as the person who has sent this worm's malicious email. It does this to hide the real sender of the infected email." Simply because I have to communicate via e-mail with a lot more people than the average person means that my e-mail addresses are in a lot more address books than the e-mail address(es) of the average person. Therefore, with worms like this one, it's going to look to a lot more people like my computer has been infected.
I'm not perfect -- I did screw up about three or four years ago and was infected by a virus but (funnily enough) it didn't arrive via e-mail. I'm not saying that I'll never be infected, but the chances are slim. If you've done your research and you're sure I'm infected, please do let me know. Otherwise, please just delete suspicious messages and their attachments unread -- that's what I do. When it comes right down to it I ask myself, "Is it worth my losing a whole bunch of data (including the GNR site), annoying hundreds (if not thousands) of my contacts (and their contacts, and their contacts' contacts), and losing a day of productivity just so I can play this cool game or laugh at a really funny cartoon?" The answer is always an emphatic no, and into the trash it goes unopened.
Sorry this is not exactly germane, but I feel I have to be polite to everybody that takes the time to e-mail me to warn me, and it all adds up. The most effective use of your time with incoming viruses is to shake your head, roll your eyes, click your tongue, and hit the delete key (not necessarily in that order).
Thanks for your time.

Server Upgrades and Upcoming Maintenance Window
We're pleased to announce that we are planning to do some extensive upgrades to the server on which this Web site is kept. These upgrades will result in some significant enhancements to some of the software packages on the server.
We will start doing these upgrades beginning this week, August 5th, 2002, and will post another message 48-72 hours before the upgrade starts. For about a 2-3 hour period during the upgrade this Web site will be inaccessible. We will, of course, do everything we can to minimise this outage. Following the upgrade we will post another message to confirm completion.
Thank-you for your business and your attention to this matter.

MUNDA WANGA
Ralph Saunders was born in 1909 of Anglo-Belgian parents and his father was a horticulturalist to the British Royal family. Ralph was responsible for laying out all of Lusaka's gardens and in 1950 he decided that he wanted to build some botanical gardens. Munda Wanga was the site for this and was opened to the public in 1960. The entrance fee was 2s 6d.
In 1968, Ralph could no longer carry the cost of maintaining Munda Wanga so it was sold to the Zambian Government, who increased the amount of land available and opened the zoo section. Munda Wanga was transferred back into the hands of the private sector in December 1998.
Ralph lived at Munda Wanga until his death in 1978.

And a few photos from the zoo section. This section is now being used mainly as an educational centre for children and many orphaned animals are being given to them. These animals are looked after until they can be returned to the wild
Banded Mongoose, bushbuck, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, bushpig

CHILANGA
How did Chilanga get its name?
Just opposite Munda Wanga is the headquarters for the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA). One of the sections was previously an open air prison. Inmates used to shout 'Chilango' which means 'punishment'. Hence the name Chilanga.
Behind the 'prison', on a small hill, is the oldest flag pole in the country, now pretty rusty. I did take a photograph of it, but unfortunately the flag pole can't be seen. Perhaps I had better get a tin of paint and then it might show up in my next photo.
So instead, a picture of the Chilanga Cement offices, taken from the road.

Hi Gordon
Great picture of the ox wagon. My Uncle Wyn Gray was a blacksmith and I watched him make one in his shop on Honiton Farm, Nega Nega, round about 1945. With the end of the Second World War, motor lorries once again became available and his business went into decline. A wagon took three weeks to complete and sold for about 180 N.R. Pounds (= Pounds Sterling.) Great memories of pounding hammers and sparks flying as the steel rims were formed and joined. I loved to operate the bellows but couldn't keep up the pace for long. The steel rims were arranged to be slightly smaller in diameter than the wooden wheels. They were then heated to red heat in a log fire. The expansion allowed the rim to just slip over the wooden wheel and the whole thing was then plunged into water to quench the smoldering wheel and shrink the rim on to a tight fit.
Cheers
David Gray

To the poster of E'ville images,
Shortly after establishing this website back in 1996, I wanted to make links to other websites by other ex-pats in Africa. Obviously what came to mind was all the ex-pats from Milawi (Nyasaland), Tanganikya (Tanzania), Kenya, Uganda, PEA (Mozambique), and the old Belgian Congo (then Zaire).
I did extensive searches (as one could in those early days of the web), but found astoundingly nothing. I did manage to scrape up a static site on the Congo, and one or two sites about old schools in East Africa. Of course there were plenty of sites from Zimbabwe (which were generally turning rather sour places of acrimony), and millions from South Africa. But I was fishing for the more true-Africa sites north of the Zambesi.
I even began a search in Belgian to see if any of the ex-pats from the Congo had started up sites in their Fatherland. Absolutely nothing!
So, I was very happy to see on the Message Board recently some images of old Elisabethville (Lubumbashi). Thank you very much for sharing.
If anyone else has photos of old colonial or immediately post-colonial and even present-day Lubumbashi, or contact with the ex-pats from the Congo, please share them with us. These people impacted our lives greatly after that fateful day in June of 1960.
Tot kijk...
Groeten...

--------
Ihave sent you some information regarding tours here in Botswana, featuring a booking for Moremi Game Reserve commencing
8 – 15 September 2002. I would appreciate if you would forward this on to other people that you think may appreciate this information. Thanking you - Danny and Jenny.
ABOUT OUR SAFARIS
Botswana is among one of the last few places in Africa where you can still have a true wildlife and wilderness experience. There are three different regions in Botswana that are so different, which attract the majority of our visitors.
The Tuli Block, which is in the eastern section of the country and is the site of Iron age ruins, and home to 1000 head of elephant.
The Central Kalahari, here you can appreciate the stark landscapes and some of the best skyscapes in the country.
The Okavango Delta and Chobe, this permanent wetland amidst the sand dunes of the desert is not to be missed. Savuti for its stark landscapes and mood, referred to as the “Soul of Botswana”, whilst Chobe has some of the largest elephant and buffalo herds.
Jareg Tours is a small family run concern, looking to keep groups small with a maximum of six people per group. This enables you to have a good relationship with your professional guide, enabling you more personal attention. Most of the tours offered in Botswana are in US $, and are out of many peoples pocket. We are offering you a unique bush experience at affordable rates.
Most tour groups offer you two days here, two days there, always on the move. We are offering a tour into Moremi Game Reserve from the 8th September – 14th September 2002, six nights in the park which we feel is needed to explore the full diversity that this Game Reserve has to offer. Two days is just a rush by glimpse, we are hoping to give you a relaxing in-depth view of Moremi.
If either the dates or the safari do not suit you we can tailor a private safari costed on the exact routing travelled and number of persons.

Dear Arthur
I hope you will post these old photos-from-slides to GNR for me, although they were taken in Lubumbashi (Elisabethville), DRC, in 1965 - 1966 on a visit by the Chingola Go-kart racing club to compete with the Belgians left in that sad city.It was also useful to top up with petrol, and to bring back a carboy or two in the boot, in those days of severe rationing in Zambia, after UDI in Rhodesia.
128:
(a) and (b): That decadent yet attractive atmosphere in the Afro-continental street cafes.
129:

(b) Go-karters outside Hotel Katanga, L.
131:
(a) Unofficial money changers (best rates twice the set border-post rate) in town
(b) E' ville airport where we had our camera snatched, and were nearly arrested as espions.
(c) Post/Telegram/Telephone centre, E' ville. I wonder if that complex of 8 floors was ever built?
Some other photos

Old news about "Mutt" - heard the story from a GNRer, namely Beth Hartmann - have just checked the addresses but alas she is not on it. I had her contact number on my ole computer that died a traumatic and horrible death from the dreaded lurgi. The reason that I am so interested is that Mutt's former wife was Stephanie Van Kirken from, you guessed it, MUF. Last time I heard from Beth, Steph was in the UK doing the cabaret circuit and the last time I saw Steph was at our place on Wellington Road (I was about 9)and she got stung by a bee - no, am not basking in my moment of fame here - she was allergic to bee stings and the ole "metamorphosis" frightened the proverbial out of me.

Many of the GNR members have written about The Lusaka Club and were members there. I dont think even hardened drinkers like Billy Laing or Charles Cartmil would stoop to this revenge.

How tricky Kale was banned from club
By PHILIP CHIRWA (Sunday Mail)
The drama started with a waiter screaming from the direction of the bar counter: "I have drunk urine! I have drunk urine!"
The shocked club patrons ran to the waiter's aid and gave him some milk to drink. He rushed into the gents and vomited. Feeling much better, he returned to the bar to resume his duties.
The patrons were surprised that the waiter had drunk a bottle of urine. How was it possible? They asked the waiter but he could not shed any light on the issue
A patron suggested that the person who put the urine into the bottle might be infected with a killer disease like AIDS.
The mention of AIDS frightened the waiter to the point where he decided to reveal the truth. He pointed at a table from which he claimed he had got the bottle. He also pointed at the members who were occupying the same table at the time he collected the bottle.
The manager called the suspects to his office and asked them who had put the urine in the bottle. "Let me warn you that all of you face a life ban from this club if you don't mention who did it."
He then asked them to go outside and consult on the matter.
Some 10 minutes later, the suspects were back in the manager's office and disclosed that it was in fact one of them, Tenzebanthu Kale, who had put urine in the bottle of Mosi.
"And what's your defence, Mr Kale?" the manager asked the self-confessed suspect. "Is it true that you did it?"
"Yes, sir, it's true I did it," he replied.
"And why did you do that? Have you gone crazy?"
"No, sir, I am as normal as everybody else in this club. It's just that I wanted to teach these waiters a lesson."
Kale then started explaining. For quite some time, he told the manager, he had noticed that there was a racket among waiters of stealing beer from drunken patrons. A patron would, for example, order six bottles of Mosi and put them at the table.
"After getting drunk, some patrons tend to fall asleep. It was during this time that a waiter would go to the table and steal a few of the bottles he found there under the pretext of that he was collecting bottles when in fact not.
"Meanwhile, when the patron wakes up from his slumber, he discovers that some of the beer has been stolen. In the meantime, he can't accuse anybody because nobody would believe him anyway, drunk as he was."
According to Kale, he had been swindled out of his beer via this racket on several occasions and since he did not know who was responsible for this, "I resolved to teach him somehow."
What he did was that he urinated in a half bottle of Mosi. He then put the bottle among other Mosi bottles. After that, he pretended to be totally drunk and closed his eyes.
Later, he heard a waiter collecting some of the bottles and walk away.
The next thing, Kale told the manager, he heard one of the waiters screaming that he had drunk urine. "I am sorry for what I did. The intention was to teach the waiters a lesson so that they should stop stealing from patrons."
But the manager, in passing his verdict, was not amused by Kale's action. "If you suspected that some of my waiters were crooks stealing from patrons, you should have informed me about it. Instead, you decided to take the law into your own hands and did what you did. You must be a very cruel man. How can you do such a thing to a fellow human being just because of beer?"
Kale's membership to the club was subsequently suspended for six months.

All GNR audiophiles (you too – Dawid)…
I’ve just read an interesting article in the SA Sunday Times regarding a man called Robert John “Mutt” Lange, who became the most successful pop-metal producer in history. By 1985 he was the world leader in hard-rock production with artists such as Def Leppard, Foreigner and Bryan Adams. Now for the crunch – “Mutt” was born 22 November 1948 on the Copperbelt in Northern Rhodesia, and went to school in Dullstroom (SA). He married Shania Twain – Country and Western megastar, and America’s darlin’; and is known to be the Svengali behind her career. Apparently, he’s a very secretive person and never gives interviews – he’s worth billions in $’s.

I can think of several Ladies who would go for the biscuit idea. All of them have beautiful melting brown eyes, long silky hair, and would be only too happy to lick you all over .....They also have four legs and an endearing bark. I know Ladies who respond to: "Roll over!" and "Beg for it!!!" and you can also drive them to the extremes of ecstacy by rubbing their tummies. But it's just puppy love I'm afraid.
Diamond bribing isn't going to work either but hey, if you've got diamonds, bring them and we'll all help you find them good homes.

Court told how biscuits bought love
By JAMESON CHIFUNDA
A 22-year-old man who enticed an 18-year-old girl by constantly buying her biscuits and subsequently had sex with her, was reprimanded by a Kapiri Mposhi local court justice, describing his way of courting as "trickery" since he denied responsibility for the girl's pregnancy.
Jonathan Mulenga, was sued by Godfrey Bwembya, 51, for impregnating his daughter Maliya Bwembya.
He said that when Mulenga was summoned to answer the charge, he denied responsibility.
In court, after Maliya revealed how he enticed her with biscuits, Mulenga admitted having had sex with her but said another man was responsible for her pregnancy.
When asked by the court to bring the man to court to present his evidence, Mulenga said he was unable to.
In his ruling, senior local court justice Isaac Temfwe scolded Mulenga for being a "trickster" who enticed an innocent young girl with gifts of biscuits so that she could accept his sexual advances.
Justice Temfwe found Mulenga guilty and fined him K700,000 to be paid as compensation to Bwembya, in monthly installments of K60,000.

I didn't know that the ZNBS house was lived in, although I did know Jill well - we played hockey together. Or at least I used to play hockey with her when I came home for the school holidays.
I, at least, was not dragged around the show endlessly as a child - when my father worked for Coopers, he had to be at the show, so when he didn't have to go, he kept right away. But when he did decide that he was ready to go back, he also looked at animals and vegetables.
But take a look at this - perhaps now that you are older, you might appreciate what it was that your father enjoyed so much.

I too have my memories of the powerlines being built - they came right through the farm on which we lived and we had a sub-station on one of the other farms. When they were erecting the lines, my father had a continual problem with them leaving the gates open and of course his cattle kept disappearing. The argument eventually ended up in court which dragged on for years and resulted in my father finally getting compensation for the cattle that were lost.
Here is a picture of the powerlines, taken just outside Siavonga, looking north.

Heather the Rugby Club looks just the same. In the background to the right are the squash courts that Attie Krause built. To the left of the squash courts Attie managed to squeeze in a reasonable sized swimming pool. Unfortunately all those big trees behind the clubhouse shaded the pool in some months and the show society wouldnt consider us pruning them.
Did you know that the tiny Zambia National Building Society show house is fully functional and was lived in for many years by Jillian Burgess who was the daughter of Mrs Rundle the Show Society General Manager. Jillian had to move out of the house every year when the show was on.
I also hated the show when I was a kid. My dad loved it and would go every single day when it was open. We were dragged up at the crack of dawn, stand for hours in queues to get in, then he was straight of to the livestock section to look at every different type of cow, bull, sheep, goat and pig which all looked the same to us.
Then off to look at vegetables. Why did adults want to look at vegetables anyway. Then poultry and eggs?
The Kennel Club at least provided some light entertainment when dignified old women tried to make their dogs walk up seesaws and through barrels. Usually the dogs just sat down or started to fight but the best was when an old woman would slip and fall down when prancing around with a dog, much to the amusement of the spectators.
Kariba Power Lines
For many years they were completely trouble free apart from some minor niggles. The lines were inspected regularly by helicopters or by Landrover driving under the lines. The inspections gradually tailed away and suddenly there was a spate of collapsing pylons and the country would be plunged into darkness.
Ater investigation it was discovered that villagers close to the pylons had found that the pylons were bolted together and it was quite simple to undo the sections of girders which were then cut and welded into bed frames.
Which was a luctrative business for the villagers. It was eventualy stopped by welding the girders together.

Lusaka Show
I did manage to persuade someone to take my camera to the Show and here is a photo of the miniature train, still running, although looking very different.

I also asked them to take two specific photos:
The Rugby Club

and the Zambia National Building Society stand.

As a child of 4 or 5, the ZNBS stand or the Permament Building Society, as it was then, always fascinated me because it was a real reproduction of the house that was their logo. ZNBS still have the same (or very similar) logo although in different colours.
Kariba Power Line Link
by Richard Hall
THEY are tough men, but tired. As the trucks come back at dusk they step down, shout a greeting to some friend across the camp, then walk slowly away to the huts that are home. This is the team engaged on the mammoth job of building the towers for the power lines to link Kariba and the Copperbelt.
All of these men are Italian, talking with the accents of Bologna, Turin, Genoa or Florence, and they have been hand-picked for their experience. On their success depends the meeting of a vital deadline, for by October, 1959, the towers must be completed and the lines in place to bring power from Kariba early in 1960.
With a project of Kariba's magnitude there are certain to be some "firsts" and "biggests" around. The power line job is no exception. The lines will carry 330,000 volts - the highest power for any line in Africa. Then the whole Kariba system will cover 900 miles - the longest in this continent.
But to the Italians living in their bushcamp a few miles from Luanshya such figures have little fascination. All they know is that the 130 foot steel giants standing in single column on the route south mean work, work, work; they also mean £80 upwards a month and all found; they also mean a drab separation from their families and a beautiful homeland.
When he is home in camp after a long day in the sun and rain, the first thing that Guiseppe or Giovanni or Carlo looks for is a letter from home. For life here is pretty lonely. Few of the Italians speak much English, and in any case the chances to savour the civilization of the Copperbelt are very few. At week-ends they may make a trip to Ndola or Luanshya to see a film and some have friends among members of the Italian community of these towns. But mostly they just rest in their camp, thinking of how much money they will have put by when the job is done, or what they will do back in Italy on leave - or arguing with the man who occupies the next bed about the complexity of Roman politics.
For these tower-builders there is little virtue in becoming too attached to one part of Rhodesia. As they complete a section they will move their camp farther south. Within a month or two they will say goodbye to the Copperbelt and set themselves up again nearer Broken Hill. They are following in the wake of the bulldozers which have cut a hundred foot swath through the bush from Kitwe to now somewhere on the far side of Lusaka. This line through the bush is ruthlessly straight, uphill and downhill across dambos and rivers, on to Kariba. It will be 275 miles long - which is an interesting comparison with the approximately 380 miles from Kitwe to Kariba by road. Along this 275 miles there will be 960 towers at intervals of 1,500 feet, and eventually these towers will carry 1,650 miles of conductors.
The engineers for the Federal Power Board are Merz and McLellan with their headquarters in a Luanshya office. Ronald Charles Websdale is the resident engineer for the consultants. He and his assistant have come out from England and are armed with experience of such work in several European countries.
Websdale, quietly spoken and surrounded by charts of the operation, lives in a world of technical problems which he does his best to bring down to simple terms for the layman. For instance: "A lot of people want to know what is going to happen about the effect of lightning on this power line. Northern Rhodesia has the second highest lightning incidence in the world - the first being Florida. There are a number of theories about the way lightning attacks a power line and one is that the surge reflects back off the earth after striking an object. This problem has been investigated very carefully, and in Northern Rhodesia the earth is generally highly resistant to electrical current. A help is to bury, in the ground between the towers, what is known as a 'counterpoise cable.' This will draw the lightning current away from the power line."
Asked whether the power carrying cables will be made of copper, Websdale smiles faintly and admits that they will not. "Of course, there were many factors involved in the decision against copper. Mainly a matter of economics, for at the time when the contract was made copper was around £400 a ton.
"So we are using aluminium, with a steel core,"
Allowance has to be made for the expansion and contraction of the cables, and for sufficient clearance above the ground in view of the voltage being carried. The minimum which is permissible is a 25 foot clearance, and also there must be a specific width for the area of cleared bush around the towers. Later this area will be increased to 200 foot wide. Average sag of the conductors will be 60 feet. In a few cases there will be a 300 foot sag in the Kafue escarpment.
The maintenance of the power lines in proper condition promises to be a major job after the current has begun to flow and it is likely that this will be the responsibility of the Federal Power Board. There are tentative plans for the building of air strips along the lines and for the construction of a road linking up the strips.
Each tower is numbered and at the moment work is going on in foundation digging in the early hundreds - so there is a long way to go before the 960th tower stands disdainfully above the bush close to Kariba.
It is hard and heavy work dragging up the steel members and bolting them together when you are suspended a hundred feet above the bush; each tower has 162 steel sections, and the completed structure must be strong enough to support conductor lines weighing several tons.
But the speed of advance is quite astonishing. Ahead of the erection gangs go the foundation diggers, who make four holes, nine feet deep and a yard across, for the main weight-bearing members set in concrete. An erecting crew consists of three Europeans and about fifteen Africans. One crew puts up the lower half of the tower and their followers put on the upper portions which will carry the conductors.
These two crews average two towers a day, or twelve a week.
Work it out for yourself: before the deadline of October, 1959, they have approximately twenty-two months or 90 weeks; and there are approximately 900 towers to be done. So twelve a week - as with everything else connected with Kariba, the report is "up to schedule." But to make quite certain that they are well within the time set the contractors are putting on extra men later this year, to assist erection and to start conductor stringing.
The erection gangs are all experienced and there have been no accidents to date. To accustom them to local conditions they were put to work first on smaller towers having the same design as those for the Kariba line. Some of these towers stand alongside the Congo border line running parallel to the Kitwe-Ndola road.
When the power is flowing it will go into a switching station adjoining the 220 KV station at Kitwe. There it will be transformed down also to 66 KV, when it will go out on the Copperbelt System to the various towns. At the towns it will again be transformed down to 11 KV and be sent out to suburban switching stations, from there to go out at the normal "run-of-the-mill" voltage. So when Copperbelt housewives turn on their electric stoves in a few years' time they might spare a thought for the men from Italy who battled in the bush to bring power from Kariba.
Head of the power line team is Signor Gino Pace, senior resident engineer. "Things have gone amazingly well," he says "Naturally the men grow a bit homesick sometimes, but it is a job we have all set our hearts on."
And the last word goes to the tall and suave Bruno Porta, who acts as assistant camp foreman and interpreter. He came down to Rhodesia from Addis Ababa for a holiday and signed on right away. In his excellent English he says: "Perhaps we have little luxury in our lives. But we have a motto all the time to keep us going: KARIBA, HERE WE COME!"
The 100-foot wide track which has been bulldozed through the bush from Kitwe to the south. Here it crosses the Ndola road just beyond the Fisenge interpass.

How to get very rich quickly
One tip from an ex-president.
Decide that your presidential jet is no longer suitable. Then send your head of security services to the USA to sell it for US$8.5 million.
Quickly bank this money into an offshore company account which has untraceable nominee directors. Then transfer the same amount into your personal Panama account.
Now you need a new presidential jet. Simple, use government funds to pay $25 million for a plane that costs only costs $20 million. Dont forget to register the plane in South Africa in your own name so that the next resale will be just as easy.

In Livingstone (on the banks of the Zambezi and also on the islands in the river) is the Dum Palm (Hyphaene ventricosa) which is also known as vegetable ivory. The stone inside the fruit is white and hard and looks like ivory and can also be carved, but again the carvings would be minute. I'll have a look at home and see if I have any photos.

The Lowdown web site also has a guestbook and I think that people often get confused about it and leave messages that would be more appropriate to the GNR. I have started going through the guestbook to extract these messages for posting here, but unfortunately my connection is so slow today that I have only managed 7 or 8 pages out of 136.
But here are the ones that were in those pages (only two) but I will continue over the next few days and who knows, maybe you'll find an old friend who you are looking for.

Heather,
As usual your pictures are wonderful. Thanks so much for the Cookson's Wildebeest - gotta see them next year!
Elspeth,
I am one of the half centurions this year - Guy Fawkes day!
Who is Gregory Aplin? Quite an unusual surname.
Fiona,
Lucky beans come from the trees of the Erythrina species. Which also have lovely nectar-filled flowers. They jump because an insect lays eggs in the seed and the larva wiggles around inside the seed, causing it to jump.
When I lived in Kenya, you could buy the same seeds - lift off the black bit (where it attaches to the pod) and the craftsmen there used to carve tiny miniature elephants out of ivory shavings - and could get many tiny, diddy elephants inside one hollowed-out seed! The detail on the carved ellies was amazing!
Bye all - wish I could come to the bash, sounds like it's going to be great fun!

I'm glad you finally managed to get your FTPs done. Lovely photos of the rivers. Also like what you called "twirly wirleys". We always called them "curly wurlies" though! I used to love it when they tried to burrow into your hand. Remember we used to get a little stick and stir up their holes to get them to come out. Does anyone remember "lucky beans"? Little red and black seeds. What tree or plant did they come from?

North Luangwa National Park
The week before last, I was supposed to travel up to Kasanka National Park, the North Luangwa National Park and Mutinondo with the German Ambassador, but unfortunately couldn't make it. However, my friend, Mel Dodhia, travelled on my behalf and took a few hundred photos. Here are a selection:
Kasanka National Park
Sausage tree

Puku

North Luangwa National Park
Buffalo and Wildebeest
The Wildebeest in the Luangwa are Cookson's Wildebeest and are unique to the Luangwa. They are more grey in colour and their hair is smoother than the ones found in the Kafue National Park which are the Blue or Common Wildebeest. They also have the largest horns and body of the Wildebeest family.

The Luangwa and Mwaleshi Rivers

Rhinos
Joe Wise of the Reading Chronicle was one of the members of the press who travelled to Zambia recently to cover Exercise Helping Hand. When they had finished their work in the Lower Zambezi and Lusaka, they went down to Livingstone and Joe has kindly sent me these photos which he took in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.
August, The Wind and the Lusaka Show
Ex-residents of Lusaka will undoubtedly remember that on 1st August, the wind starts blowing in Lusaka and then it blows and it blows and it blows. Last night, the wind started blowing, right on cue, although it is not as windy today. But together with the wind comes the Lusaka Show, which opens today.
I refuse to go to the Show - too many people, too dusty and a million other reasons - so unless I can persuade someone else, you will not be getting any photos. But I have scanned some photos for you from the book Showtime by Dick Hobson. Showtime is the history of the Agricultural and Commercial Society of Zambia from 1914 to 1976. The ACSZ are the organisers of the Lusaka Show. After the show is over (and if I remember) I shall contact the Show Society to see if they still have copies of the book available for anybody who is interested.

Heather Chalcraft,
I haven't forgot the Cape Town Caper - just been a bit busy. I'm trying to glean more info on it.

If you are going to address multiple topics in a single message or are not going to reply on the topic of a particular message, then you should start a new message.
Finding Text on the Message Board
Considering each message board can get quite large, it can be quite a challenge to find a particular word or name, especially if you're sure that you saw that word or name somewhere before. There's a much easier way to search the page than scrolling through hundreds of messages until you're cross-eyed. On Windows-based computers, you can just hit Ctrl+F; in Internet Explorer a small search box will appear on top of the message board (assuming that you already have the message board open) and in Mozilla Firefox a search box will appear at the bottom of the browser window. Just type the word or words for which you are searching into the box, then hit the Enter key (in Internet Explorer) or follow the highlighting (in Firefox) to see where your browser stops as it searches for the word. Repeat as often as necessary to find all instances of your search term.
Getting Your Browser to Remember Passwords
Most (if not all) modern Web browsers have some sort of mechanism for remembering the user IDs and passwords required for some Web sites. To get the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer (used by about 90% of GNR visitors) to remember the passwords you have to enter into a Web page:
- Click on Tools then Internet Options.
- Click on the Content tab.
- Click on the AutoComplete button.
- Click to put a check mark in the "User names and passwords on forms" field.
- Click OK, then click OK again.
To get Mozilla Firefox (upon which Netscape Navigator is based, so the instructions are probably about the same) to remember your user IDs and passwords, do the following:
- Click on Tools then Options.
- Click the Privacy icon.
- Click Saved Passwords.
- Click to put a check mark in the "Remember Passwords" field.
- Click OK.
You should still keep a record of your passwords somewhere, as your passwords will all be lost if you have to do something like reinstall Windows.
Submitting Images for Posting
If you would like to have an image posted here, but do not have a server on which to post the image, please read the submission instructions and the "Contributing to this Site" page for some important tips on scanning pictures.
Contacting Posters
In an attempt to defeat spammers who would like to collect e-mail addresses from this message board, e-mail addresses of posters are not shown; instead, a link to the poster's Names Directory entry (or a contact form for non-members) is added at the end of each message, through which members can contact the poster should they so desire. (Message boards prior to April 2002, accessible only to members once logged in, do show "broken" e-mail addresses.) E-mail addresses are not shown in the Names Directory either; instead, a Web-based form is used to initiate contact. If you already know the e-mail address of the person you would like to contact, we suggest that you use regular e-mail rather than using the Names Directory system. Only members may use the Web-based contact system.
Complaints
The Great North Road is not responsible for and does not necessarily endorse the contents of messages posted on the message board. If you have a complaint about a poster's message, complain directly to that poster. Do not contact the GNR with complaints about a message posted unless you are quite certain that the message in question contravenes either criminal or civil legislation. In your complaint, ensure that you quote the legislation and the jurisdiction in question and (preferably) provide a link to a copy of the legislation on the Web, published on an authoritative (i.e., government) Web site. Threats of a general nature will be ignored; death threats will be (and have been) reported to the appropriate law-enforcement authorities.
Contacting Someone Responsible for the GNR
Several people are responsible for keeping this site operational; each is responsible for different areas of the site. While each of us reads this message board to a differing extent, you should use e-mail if you want to contact one of us for a specific reason and require a response. We may miss your message if you post it on the message board.
Have fun!
