Message Board Archives
The archived message boards prior to April 2002 are for viewing by members only to prevent email addresses from falling into the hands of spammers. You can register for access here, and read additional details at the end of the page.
Please note that most of the message boards archived below are large, and so may take some time to download depending on the speed of your connection. The average size is about 500 kB, with some being 1 to 2 MB.
Since September 2nd, 1999, GNR members have posted 53 558 messages! (For those interested in more detailed statistics, you can see some on the statistics page.)

Message Board Notes
The first message board was started on the Great North Road on September 2nd, 1999, and has run every month (with a few minor and major breaks) since then. Here is an explanation of the timeline, which covers the different formats used and your ability to access them:
- September 1999 to September 2000: This message board was threaded, but it very quickly became far too cumbersome to use. It was replaced in February 2000, but it was not shut down until September 2000. This explains why, from February 2000 to September 2000, there are two sets of statistics for each month. While the index of these messages is available to the public, only members are able to read the individual messages and must log in to do so.
- February 2000 to present: The current message board is simply presented in reverse chronological order -- i.e., with the most recent message posted at the top of the page. Within this period there are some things to note:
- February 2000 to March 2002: Before spam and viruses became such a problem, the message board used to display members' email addresses. As a result, only members can view all of the message boards during this period and they have to log in to do so. Even so, once logged in you will notice that all email addresses have been changed so that they no longer look like email addresses. You will need to use your ingenuity to piece together email addresses if you wish to try and contact someone that way.
- April 2002 to February 2005: These message boards continued to use the same system, but instead of displaying a member's email address, displayed a link to a web-based contact system usable only by members once logged in. Because email addresses are not displayed, these messages are available to the public.
- March 2005 to present: While looking much the same as previous message boards, these ones use a completely different system, and support the ability to display the message board in either a chronological format or a threaded format, sorted with the most recent message first or last, and for a period of time you can choose. It also supports replies -- hence the threading. Another feature is that each message has its own address, so you can link to an individual message rather than trying to find just one message in amongst hundreds posted in a given month. Again, these message boards are available for anyone to read and use a web-based system for members to contact one another privately.
