Broken Hill Old Timers 1951-2

From Great North Road

This is for all middle-aged Bhers,

I recently sat down with my father and asked him to name the men in this photograph – taken circa 1951-2. He rattled off the

names, and had an anecdote for each person - even the one he couldn’t recall clearly (“His first name was Bill and his

nickname was ‘Shakespeare’, as he spent most of his free time with the amateur theatre society”). His memory and recall of

events never fails to amaze me. My father turned 87 last month.

Now we know why the Copperbelters brag about playing rugby against the Lusakians – and never mention their matches at the

Centre of the Known Universe.
