Eastern Province Trip - 2002
From Great North Road
The photos of my trip to the Eastern Province. Chipata first:
What was, I believe, the PWD building
Heading out of Chipata towards the Malawi border
The view towards the Malawi border, taken just outside Chipata, on the eastern side
This is the oldest Church in Zambia, built in 1903.
Chipata Fire Station
Chipata Golf Club is the oldest golf club in the country and will be celebrating its 100th birthday this year. The club will be arranging a golf tournament for this, but the date is not yet known. I decided that the nissen hut outside must have ben there for at least fifty year
The main street in Chipata
Chipata Mosque
Chipata - Lusaka Road - on the way back from Chipata
Just outside Chipata
This building was on the way back to Lusaka (I have forgotten between which towns). I wondered if there is anyone who remembers it?
Chipata Hospital - this is where Elias was born. It is now a hostel for the nurses
The hills just north of Petauke - a distinct landmark
Petauke Rocks - these were either just south or just north of Petauke - a little distance off the road
The Magistrate's Court in Petauke
Petauke main street
Many people who travelled to the Eastern Province will remember the hotel/resthouse at Kachalola which was built in 1951. In the 70's it was the place where we all stopped for morning tea and sandwiches and perhaps a dip in the pool. It was taken over by National Hotels Development Corporation and was privatised a few years ago, through an MBO. They are currently refurbishing the pool and trying to clean things up.
The Chongwe River which is just north of the town of Chongwe (about 40 kilometres from Lusaka). The Chongwe flows into the Zambezi. The bridge was blown up by the Rhodesians in 1979
Nyimba is about half way between Lusaka and Chipata - last stop for fuel up there before you reach Chipata
This is taken looking up the Luangwa River, from just before the bridge (I had to climb on top of my car to get
above the trees)
This is the same photo that was posted on the board last month - again to show how the level of the water rises and drops. The level was down again from three weeks ago.
Hillside School in Chipata was built in 1953. They have a room full of old records there and the vice-principal was extremely helpful and has offered me free access to them.
