Kabwe (Broken Hill) - 2001

From Great North Road

Contributed by Heather Chalcraft.

Herewith the Kabwe (Broken Hill) photos.

The Elephant's Head has been taken over by some friends of mine (the Doyle family, who grew up in Lusaka, Mazabuka and possibly the Copperbelt as well). The name has been changed to Tuskers Hotel (Elephant's Head had unfortunately got rather a bad name hence the change of name). They are in the process of refurbishing it completely - new carpets, new curtains, new furniture and it is looking good.

When the Mine closed down, they were going to fill in the pool, but it has now been taken over by a private individual who has kept it open. He was the only person on the entire trip who asked me to pay for the photos. He not only got paid, he also got a five minute lecture about it.

Kabwe has just had a number of their roads rehabilitated, so the main roads are looking a lot better except that I noticed some problems - you can see from picture number 2 that it is bleeding (too much bitumen in the mix). By the end of this year all the major centres will have been done (high traffic volume roads only) and next year, the Copperbelt towns will be done (Kitwe and Ndola have already been done)
