Last of the Mohicans

From Great North Road

This is the last of the Mohicans. This was taken when Jimmy Attenborough came to say goodbye to us on his retirement from the NRP, Jim was the man who went and gave the knock on the door of the President to be Dr Kenneth Kaunda and depositing him in the local caboose in Lusaka, we were all on alert that day in 1959 but it passed off quietly in Chingola, when I started with them in 1959 there was at least 16 white CID officers in town and as you can see we were sadly depleted in I think this was 68-69? I kept in touch with Jim and visited him on several occasions in Margate where he retired too with his buddy Gavin they had the fishing store there, and Jim told me that the president had sent him the highest order awarded in Zambia, The Zambian Eagle, unfortunately Jim died many years ago but he will always be remembered in the annals of the NRP and by all the men who served under him.

The names on the photo from left to right of the white officers are Johnny Green, Chalky White, Paddy Linnane deceased, Jimmy Attenborough deceased, Len Sutton, and the last man was the prosecutor whose name I cannot now remember, I hope he will forgive me, I cannot remember all the names of the Zambian detectives so I will not name any of them but I hope they get to see this as they were all good buddies of mine.

This photo is for the benefit of the ex NRP man who had a birthday a few days ago, and the gentleman who keeps appealing for NRP memoranda, this was the fine body of men who were looking after Chingola residents in I think it was 1962 they are now scattered far and wide but keep in touch with each other through the association as I do, I hope the birthday boy can see someone he knew.
