Lusaka and Kafue

From Great North Road

Lusaka and Kafue - images from the Zambia Information Services Archives

Herewith the explanations for those that need them. But before I give the explanations, I just need to explain that some of the dates that have been given to me may not be strictly correct - some of them I think might be the date on which ZIS received the photograph rather than the date on which it was taken.

And credit for all these photos should go to Zambia Information Services.

These are the Houses of Parliament 5th June 1968

This is a copy of a very old photo that they had. The cooling tower for the power station still stands although a few years ago they decided they wanted to demolish it. They tried, but didn't succeed and eventually called in the original contractors (Lewis Construction) who explained that it couldn't be demolished because of the steel reinforcing in the structure.

The traffic circle at the front of the photo is where the Cenotaph is. The first big building on the left is the police headquarters, the one after that is the Ministry of Finance and the next one is the Anglo American Head office. At the end of the second roundabout you can see the Cathedral. The first building on the right hand side is the original British South Africa Company headquarters. It is now the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Behind that on the traffic circle is the High Court. February 1971

Lusaka 1971 - This is one of the photos that I know has the wrong date. The first building is police headquarters and the cathedral in the distance. The Ministry of Finance and Anglo buildings had not yet been built.

Longacres.

Lusaka 1971 - This is the traffic circle at Longacres. If you went to the right, you would come to the original Lusaka Airport (now an air force base). The house at the front on the very left is now a restaurant and just behind that you can see Vans Motors and just to the right of Vans is Barclays Bank - it is still Barclays Bank. Behind those buildings (after the trees) is Lusaka Boys School

Lusaka Cairo Road 1955 - I am not sure if this is the right date and need to check which of those buildings still exist. Certainly the third on along does - that was where My Own Grocers was.

Lusaka 6th September 1975 - I am not sure if this is the right date because my recollection is that some new buildings had been built along Cairo Road by that stage. This is the approach to Cairo Road from the south.

This is parking area in front of what was OK Bazaars, looking towards the north. The photo would have been taken from Chester House. 4th March 1968

Farmer's Co-op.

Farmer's Co-op.

The building at the front was Farmer's Co-op and the building immediately behind it is Farmer's House. Both these buildings have been demolished and Farmers House has been rebuilt. There is still further development going on. 2nd July 1968

This was somewhere along Cairo Road in the very early 1900's - I am not sure of the exact date.

They tell me this is Lusaka but I can't for the life of me work out exactly where it is.

I'm pretty sure this is Kasungula - the landscape looks right as does the pontoon, but there was no caption on the photo. The photo would have been taken prior to 1992/3 because at that time, two new 100-tonne pontoons were put at Kasungula and the old one was moved to Sesheke. Whether this is the same one or not, I am not sure
