Mufulira Mining Disaster
From Great North Road
25th September 1970 ~ published in the local newspaper - The Times of Zambia.
This poem was written while listening to the news. I was so shocked to hear 93 men had lost their lives in a terrible mud rush, under ground, at Mufulira Mine. It was dedicated to the families of the victims.
Oh Father of Love, our hearts are torn,
we mourn the loss of that fateful morning.
You must have a need for them, up there
or you wouldn’t have taken them into your care.
All we ask is your guidance, to adjust
and accept fate’s cruel penance.
The sudden loss is so hard to bear
that we, the mourners, offer this prayer:
Please keep them safe and our love guide
to their immortal souls “til that ‘Evening Tide’
when we will join our hearts once more
and share in your love as we did before.
Sue Forde ~ 1970.
