Nkhwazi (Northern Rhodesia Police Magazine)
From Great North Road
Steve Stephenson has kindly scanned a copy of the Nkhwazi Special Edition, volume 12, number 1 from April 1964. At the moment the pages, including the text, are all in image format. All thirty-five images have been combined into a compressed .zip file which is 7 MB in size. Using a 56 kbps modem it will take you about 17 minutes to download this -- faster connections will, obviously, take less time. Click on the link below to start the download. You will need a program that can decompress .zip files to view the images within. The most popular utilities for this, if you don't already have the functionality, are WinZip and PKZip. (Most computers these days already come with the functionality to open .zip files.) Software to view the images will also be needed, but image viewing software is also pretty standard on most computers.

I am, in between other projects, working on converting the scanned text into HTML files. If anyone else out there is a wiz at using OCR, has better software and hardware than I do and a bit of time to do some or all of the conversion, then I would be most appreciative of some help. All I would need back is some plain text files and I will convert that into HTML files that fit the GNR template.
The information that Steve provided for this issue of Nkhwazi is as follows:
- The Nkhwazi Special Edition, volume 12, number 1, April 1964 was printed by the Government Printer, Lusaka.
- The Northern Rhodesia Police Magazine Nkhwazi was registered at the G.P.O. as a newspaper and this copy, which contains much more, was sold as issued "so that it would remind readers in future years about the Force." Many people in the Force contributed items of interest. It was sold at a price of sixpence! The then Commissioner of Police was Mr. E.H. Halse, now deceased.
- There was a editorial board but there is no notation of a copyright on the copy I have. As the editorial says, "it was produced to remind readers in future years about the Force." I would think that the editorial board (if they are still alive) would be only to pleased to see it displayed. I have no contact with them. Why not just mention their names to give them a bit of "face"?
- Editorial Board Members: L.A. Hicks, P.R.B. Speich.
- Business manager: Mr. A.W. Horsfield.
- Editorial Office: P.O. Box RW 103, Ridgeway, Lusaka.
- Circulation Manager: Mr. M. Ross.
- Circulated Thrice Yearly.
