Photograph Album - Bill Miles

From Great North Road

By William Miles.

All these were from in or around Nkana/Kitwe except the warning sign which was I think on the Rhodesian side of Beit Bridge. I think that someone like Ron Clibborn-Dyer could probably give names to the flowers - I was interested in them, but not very into Latin names - had had a scarring intro to Latin teaching 19th century style that put me off it big time!

The Gaboon Viper was killed on the farm, as was a 10 ft python- no picture I'm afraid. The last 6 inches of the sides of the chicken runs were corrugated asbestos, and the python slid down one of the corrugations, after swallowing three chickens, it couldn't reverse the procedure & was dispatched by staff - I know, this is not a good thing, but the conservation message had not spread very far at that time.

The damndest thing was the other chickens response - they formed a crowd around the snake clucking quietly & looking at it - if you could speak Chicken, they were probably saying "Look at that great big worm - yeah but did you see what it did to Gerty, Doris & Fanny". Sorry, I get a bit carried away - I'll have to get a shot of Scotland's finest export to settle the fevered brain.
