The Nchanga Open Pit, which is 6,600 ft. long 2,650 ft. wide at its widest part and some 500 ft. deep. So far about 96.9 million bank cubic yards of overburden and ore have been removed from the orebody. More than two million tons of ore are mined from the Nchanga pit each year
Chibuluma
A new mining venture which it is estimated will produce 32,000 long tons of copper per year and provide employment for approximately 450 people has been announced by the Anglo American Corporation Group in Zambia.
The new development results from intensive prospecting operations in the Mibula-Fitula area near Chingola on the Copperbelt. The geological work which is continuing has so far indicated ore reserves of 11.6 million short tons at an average copper grade of 3.9 per cent at depths varying from 70 to 50 feet.
It is planned to mine the deposits from three open pits which will produce in total about 1,200,000 tons of ore a year. Some 9,000,000 cubic yards of overburden a year will have to be removed. The primary crushing will probably be done at a new plant in the area and the crushed ore transported by rail to Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines for treatment.
It is estimated that the Mibula-Fitula project will reach production within two years and that the capital required will be between £5 million and £6 million.
