The Welensky Papers: a History of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The Welensky Papers: a History of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.
By J.R.T. Wood.

Very rarely does a tiny segment of the millennia old history of Africa come along in which one is very fortunate to play a role, indeed a role in which one knows all of the participants and is involved in the subtle and intriguing political nuances. Such an historical segment was, for me, the rise and fall of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. In addition to having been an active participant in much of this history-making episode, I have in my personal library, almost every book and brochure that deals in full or in part with this most important period, and with the three independent nations that succeeded the Federation, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

From the point of view of historical fact, thoroughness and clarity, none compares with the superb, biographical effort of Professor Wood to analyze, distill and present the copious papers of Sir Roy Welensky, one of the principal architects of Federation and its’ Prime Minister from November, 1956, until its official dissolution under the RHODESIA AND NYASALAND ACT (1963), at midnight, December 31, 1963.

On the face of it, some would incorrectly say that this is a very minor historical playlet, not really worthy of great study. I would disagree. This period is in essence the story of British settlers coming together with the blessings of the mighty British government to militantly impose their will against the Africans of the three territories of Nyasaland, Northern and Southern Rhodesia. This is the story of how determined and valiant men and women led by Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda of Nyasaland and Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda of Northern Rhodesia fought for and won their battle against colonial rule and for self government. Bereft of funds and despite physical abuse, prison and the military might of the Federation, they triumphed. The Federation collapsed and British rule ended forever in Central Africa.

As one who has had research access to Sir Roy's papers at the Bodleian Library at Oxford, I marvel at Professor Wood's scholarship, perceptiveness and biographical sensitivity which enabled him to distill this historical treasure trove into 1330 detailed yet highly readable pages.

Despite the intense animosity which existed between many of the adversaries during the fight, Professor Wood is successful in portraying Sir Roy's surprisingly even handed and fair treatment of his political enemies, both British and African. Petulant and arrogant during his leadership years, Welensky's written legacy shows a decidedly different attitude of understanding towards his Federation enemies. In the final analysis, all of the players were fighting tooth and nail for what they believed in, and thanks to Professor Wood's very competent analysis of Sir Roy's papers, we are left with what I consider to be the most important written description of this very complex and important historical period.

This is a "must read" for any scholar of British colonial history or for anyone fascinated, as I am, with "right, triumphing over might".

Great Epic Books has acquired the entire remaining stock of this magnificent volume from the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust. Supply is quite limited.

This exquisitely produced, signed limited edition, will command pride of place in any Africana library.

The original review may be read at www.greatepicbooks.com/review/november98.html, where you will find for sale the deluxe limited signed edition. These are numbered 1 to 200 and signed by Sir Roy Welensky and Professor J.R.T. Wood. A signed Christmas card from Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda and a signed note from Dr. Kenneth D. Kaunda, Sir Roy's principal Federation adversaries, are included with each volume. Elegantly bound in royal blue calf with raised bands and gilt titles, enclosed in a matching slipcase with matching velvet lining. The encased volume is presented in a full colour, descriptive, heavy cardboard box. Overall, a beautifully produced publishing masterpiece of which Sir Ernest would be eminently proud. No cover available. Keeping House in Lusaka.
By Karen Tranberg Hansen.

This book pens a window on the experiences of urban people living through one of Africa's most dramatic economic declines in the postcolonial era by focusing on such broad themes as household dynamics, gender politics, and informal economy in Mtendere. The author argues that African urbanism is not purely a product of colonialism but a result of a wide variety of influences both local and foreign. (Amazon.com Book Review.)
