Edmund Glazer and Rick Rescorla ... In Memoriam
|
|
The Great North Road (Northern Rhodesians Worldwide)
mourns the loss of
Edmund Glazer and Rick Rescorla
who perished in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11th, 2001. Edmund was aboard American Airlines flight 11 when it was hijacked by the terrorists and deliberately crashed into the World Trade Center. Rick was in the first tower to collapse -- he was on his way back up to look for stragglers.
Edmund was 41-years-old, and is survived by his wife, Candy, and son, Nathan. Rick was 62-years-old and is survived by his wife, Susan, son Trevor, daughter Kim, and step-daughter Alexandra.
Edmund was our countryman, born in Ndola on March 21, 1960. Rick too lived in Northern Rhodesia and served as an inspector in the Northern Rhodesia Police. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends, as they are with the families and friends of the thousands of other innocents killed and injured in this bestiality.
Please see the memorial set up by Edmund's employer, MRV Communications, to learn more about Edmund and find out how you can help Candy and Nathan.
Please see the petition to the President of the United States to have Rick awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

This page is meant to be a simple memorial, although we may add to it over time. Between Rick (actually Cyril Richard Rescorla) and Edmund there are over 16 000 hits on search engines when searching for Rick Rescorla and Edmund Glazer. (That was in 2003. As of late 2007, it's interesting to note that search results for Rick have climed to over 57 000, and search results for Edmund have dropped to under a thousand.)

Rick seemed to have quite a history, and had achieved at least his 15 minutes of fame long before September 11th. The author of the New Yorker article linked to above has written a book about Rick called Heart of a Soldier: A Story of Love, Heroism, and September 11th. Rick, as the vice president of security for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, is credited with saving at least 3000 lives on September 11th due to his farsightedness, his preparation for just such an attack, and his insistence on evacuating the employees of his company against the advice of officialdom. Because of his efforts, only six of their employees died -- Rick, two other security personnel, and three other employees. Had he heeded the advice of the people advising against the evacuation of his tower (the South Tower, which hadn't yet been hit) it is likely that thousands more would have died. Rick would have lived; he made it out of the tower alive after it was hit, but he was last seen heading up the stairs looking for stragglers -- apparently people in wheelchairs. The tower collapsed on him.
A donation of US$100 on behalf of the GNR was made to a fund set up by Edmund's employer (MRV Communications) for Nathan's post-secondary education. This money was collected at the Bath Bash, which was organised by Scarscalp and had been previously scheduled to occur on Saturday, September 15th, 2001.
