In the main, members of the Zambezi Expedition were utilised to look after the boats and stores. The overland journeys followed by the expedition were carried out by Dr. D. Livingstone, Dr. J. Kirk, and the Rev. C. Livingstone in 1860, and again in 1861 accompanied by J. Neil. The overland journey from Chibisa to Tete was made by Dr. J. Kirk and G. Rae in 1859 and R. Thornton made this journey and back shortly before his death in 1863. Mr. Edward D. Young, R. N., was a Petty Officer who was given an honorary commission in the Royal Navy on his retirement.
