The "Interactive Map of Nkana-Kitwe" is a vector-graphics file. Vector graphics are superior to bitmap graphics. Real geometry was used to create the map, not pixels. So no matter how deeply you zoom in, the resolution will never deteriorate. For this reason, you will need special software to view the map.

History and specifications of the map ...
The "Interactive Map of Nkana-Kitwe" is a digitised version of an original printed map published by the Department of Federal Surveys as "Street Maps of Kitwe, Chingola and Mufilira". The digitised version you will see is of the town of Nkana-Kitwe, Northern Rhodesia. The original maps were printed by the Federal Government Printer for the Federal Department of Trigonometrical and Topographical Surveys of the government of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland at Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia, in 1961. Today, Nkana-Kitwe is the City of Kitwe in the Republic of Zambia. The original printed maps also include maps and indices of the towns of Mufilira and Chingola. There is also an index of the Nkana-Kitwe map (153 kB) and a legend (38 kB). On paper, the original printed map is 99 cm by 74.5 cm (including all three towns and the inset map of the Copperbelt). The map of Nkana-Kitwe occupies 48 cm by 62.5 cm (including the inset map of the Copperbelt) of that space.
The digital map ...
The map that displays in your browser or Autodesk® Design Review 2008 (ADR) window was digitised from the original printed map into AutoCAD® (a computer-aided design software program) and then saved as a Drawing Web Format (DWF) file so that it could be displayed in a web page. This is a vector graphic file, so no matter how deeply you zoom in, the resolution will never deteriorate as with scanned pixel-based bitmap images.
To see the map, you need to download the Autodesk® Design Review 2008 (ADR) application, which is about 40 MB to 55 MB in size and which will occupy between 91 MB and 130 MB on your hard disk. This application is designed for modern computers. Downloading is best done using a high-speed Internet connection, such as that offered by most broadband connections. It is also important to note that this map is fairly resource-intensive, so if you have an older computer, downloading and installing the applications and loading the map will take longer. The map itself is only about 249 kB.
After downloading the Autodesk application you will also be able to view the Nkana-Kitwe map in the ADR application as a stand-alone file. It is not required that you use the GNR or your browser to view the file. This is handy because the ADR application allows you to view any other DWF file. There is a large, active DWF community and many resources available on the Web.
Before beginning ...
- In order to download the ADR application, you will be required to enter some personal details on the Autodesk site in order to register your free use of the application.
- The instructions we provide on the GNR assume you are using a Windows operating system.
- As when you install any software, remember, it's best that you close down all applications that you do not need on your desktop.
