George's Obituary
George Burrow -- 10th May 1925 to 12th July 2004
Thank you all for your support....
Our Dad passed away in the wee hours of the morning on Monday the 12th of July 2004. My sister Geraldine and I were with him when he passed on. No words can describe the sense of loss that our whole family feels. He impacted on all of us, our spouses, children as well as our friends. Those of you who met him even once will know how outgoing he was and how much he loved to make new friends. If you were unlucky enough to be a single female you will know what a charmer he could be too!
He was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in June 2003 and went through his courses of Chemo without any bother at all. It was only after his aneurysm operation on the 11th of December that things started to wear him down. I will never forget his words with the Dr that day, "So George, we have to do the operation, if you don't it will kill you within 8 to 10 hours. You have a 60/40 chance of making it through the operation and we have to act now." "Fine," says Dad, "Will I still be able to go to Cape Town in two weeks time?" The idea that he would not get the better of everything that was being thrown at him did not cross his mind. Geraldine and I went with him down to the entrance of the operating room. Even there he was cheering up the lady being lined up for an op next to him and the nurse got one of his chat up lines as he read her staff name badge, "Audrey, I had an aunt called Audrey, where are you from..." is all we could hear as they wheeled him off. By the way, he eventually made that trip to Cape Town.
He made it through that and a few other things thrown at him along the way. He went into hospital on the 8th for a check up as he was just not coming right. He kept his spirits up all the time laughing and joking with all around him. In the early hours of Monday the 12th he suffered a massive heart attack but came back after the nurses worked on him. However, it was all too much and he left us around 6am that morning with my sister and I bawling our eyes out by his side, what else can you do! The rest of the family headed for airports and were all with us by Wednesday.
The service was very special with three priests down from Rustenburg and one from Edenvale. His great friend Fr Liam was unfortunately out of the country. Fr Michael gave a fantastic eulogy summing up our Dad to the tee and I managed to read one, on behalf of the family, written by my sister Anne's hubby Phil. It was not easy but we managed. Then the lone piper piped him out of the church to the waiting hearse. His oldest Grandchild, Sarah-Jane, saluted him as the piper finished the lament. We all gave Dad a final round of applause which seemed fitting. SJ is now a pilot with the Australian Airforce and obtained permission to wear her uniform for the occasion. Her Grandfather, himself a pilot in the '40's, would have been proud.
A sad day right enough but a service that would have been fit for royalty. Well over 80 people headed back to his house and we did what we had always promised him, had a wake to remember.
Our family would like to thank you for your prayers and your support, we will miss our Dad terribly but we will take great comfort from the large turn out at his service and for all the calls and emails that we have all received over the past week, clearly he was well respected and loved.
Thank you all and God bless, on behalf of the Burrow family.
Stephen Burrow
