Original Names Directory
The old Names Directory is no longer available, and we have no plans to make it available again in the future.
Originally the old Directory was started in 1996 when it was still fine to show e-mail addresses on the Web. Since then, automated harvesting by spammers and viruses/worms have made the display of e-mail addresses on the Web an unwise undertaking. For a Web site such as the GNR, entrusted by thousands of members with their e-mail addresses, it becomes not only unwise, but also irresponsible.
For this reason, among others, the current Names Directory was started, and it protects the e-mail addresses of members by requiring members to log in to use a Web-based contact system to contact each other. In this process the e-mail address of the recipient is not revealed to the sender by the Web site although, if the recipient wishes, he or she can easily provide the sender with his or her e-mail address once contact has been established. This system protects our members from both spam (aka "unsolicited commercial e-mail" [UCE] or "unsolicited bulk e-mail" [UBE]) and viruses and worms.
