Site Updates and Events in 2001

• Added a Code of Conduct to the site to govern conduct on the message board.
• Reinstated the message board.

• Added a waving Zambian flag to the home page.
• Updated the message board script to restrict the length of non-message fields and log the IP addresses of posters (for spammer tracking purposes).

• Brought the "Lusaka News" under the wing of the Great North Road. Formerly a print newsletter for former residents of Lusaka, the "Lusaka News" is now on-line and future editions will be published at its permanent URL: lusakanews.northernrhodesia.org.

• Replaced the Federation flag on the home page with Dave's cool, new, waving Northern Rhodesian flag.

• Reformatted the new Names Directory to work the same way as the old one did. This means that you don't have to load the entire database to view it, so you will be able to look for people much more quickly instead of waiting forever for the single page to load.
• Rewrote the message board script so that e-mail addresses are no longer linked and written in the proper format. This is a temporary but (hopefully) reasonably effective measure to stop spammers from collecting e-mail addresses from the message board to add to their unsolicited commercial e-mail (aka spam) mailing lists.

• Moved the entire site to its own domains: greatnorthroad.org and northernrhodesia.org.

• Added a page of instructions for sending pictures to Arthur for inclusion on the message board.
• Added one event to the events page in the United Kingdom.
• Updated the Contributing to this Site page with Arthur's new e-mail address and a link to his notes on sending him pictures for the message board.

• Added warnings to the main Names Directory page and the actual list of names against harvesting the e-mail addresses contained within for the purpose of spamming them. Legal action will be taken against people, companies or organisations who do not heed the warning. I am also working on ways to protect the privacy of GNR members.
• Added three events to the events page, one each in South Africa, the United Kingdom and Zambia.

• Moved the memorial page for Edmund Glazer from the home page and the message board address to a permanent location on the GNR, updated it, and added a link to it to the home page.

• Added another story by Bob Smith to the Northern Tales section, this one entitled "Mufulira Caledonian Society Pipe Band". There are plenty more in the works from others too.
• Added an event in South Africa to the events page.

• Updated the GNR Book Store by removing links and search boxes on the home page associated with the now-defunct Indigo, and added a link to and information about The Colonial Book Co. in Durban, South Africa.

• Thanks to Heather for the editing, I have added a brilliant story by Bob Smith to the Northern Tales page entitled "Nyasaland and all That".
• Thanks to Ian Singer for supplying it (ages ago, I might add) and Arthur for retyping it, I have added an article from the September 1966 "Horizon" magazine entitled "Great North Road" to the After Livingstone... section.
• Added some new links to the links page.

• Made a few changes to the home page, the most significant of which is the addition of a quote from Lynthia expressing sentiments felt by most, if not all, of the membership of the GNR.
• Added the same quote to the top of the message board. It beautifully sums up the entire purpose of this Web site.

• Changed all links on the site to the old Names Directory to point to the new Names Directory. Now it isn't a big secret anymore. I still need to do a lot of work to it to make it user-friendly, but in the meantime it looks better than it did and it sorts the names alphabetically by last name. The old Names Directory will remain on the site for the foreseeable future.
• Updated the News headlines page to remove broken feeds. UPI world news and About.com travel have now been replaced by similar feeds from the "New York Times".
• Updated the Contributing to this Site page to add information about sending items to Heather Chalcraft in Lusaka.
• Updated the About this Site page to add Heather's name to the GNR team.

• After a long hiatus since the last update of reasonable significance (although small changes to keep everything running smoothly are made almost every week, even though they might not be obvious), some changes have been made to the site. My thanks to Arthur Steevens for his ongoing help.
• Speaking of Arthur, it is Arthur to whom you should send any images you want posted on the site. He has graciously taken on this duty for the message board (where most images are currently making their first stop on the site) and we will soon be working on a system whereby he can easily add these images to the various categories which already exist throughout the rest of the site. For more information on this, please read the updated information on the Contributing to this Site page... especially the part about the GNR Book Store.
• Updated the About this Site page.
• Added several new links to the links page.
• Added a link to the current message board to the top and bottom of every message board in the archives to make it easier to get back after searching for old messages. Thanks to Dave Cooper for the suggestion. Often it helps to have someone else sitting at your own computer trying to navigate a site you have designed to get instant feedback -- sometimes with naughty words!
• Added to the list of on-line book stores in the GNR Book Store.
• Improved the look of the output of the site search engine.
• Finally implemented a new and automated Names Directory. This is still in its infancy (which explains a lot of things, especially the crappy look), so please read the explanatory information carefully. The format and functionality will evolve over the coming weeks.
