Site Updates and Events in 2006

• The "Birthday Bot" was born today. This is an automated process to post birthday wishes to the message board for those members who have included their date of birth in their Names Directory entry, and to send an e-mail message to those members who have also opted in to receiving newsletters from the GNR.

• To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the GNR, Dave Cooper and Vincent Steenberg have placed online a copy of the The British South Africa Company Historical Catalogue & Souvenir of Rhodesia, Empire Exhibition, Johannesburg, 1936-37.

• Made some minor improvements to the Web-based, inter-member contact system.

• Information about future funding of the GNR has been posted on the message board.

• Introducing "The Boma": We now have a Web-based content-management system of sorts on the GNR, which means that it will be quicker and easier to publish stuff on the site. More importantly, considering we actually have over 7000 pictures and probably hundreds of stories buried in the message board archives, the stuff added from this day forward will be organised, categorised and, most importantly, searchable. Rather than waiting until everything is perfect, because it never will be, we're throwing open the doors now and the "Boma", as clever Arthur has dubbed it, will grow as the three of us add new stuff and move old stuff from the archives. Until we get our bearings it will just be the three of us, but we are looking at options to allow broader direct input. The Boma also uses much of a new design that a friend of mine actually did for the GNR a couple of years ago. She'll get credit in due course, but for now only the Boma uses the new design; I'll convert the rest of the site when I have the bugs worked out in the Boma. Some of the pictures you see in the headers are taken by professional photographer François d'Elbée, who has graciously given us permission to use these pictures. They are taken from his excellent coffee-table book, The Bush and Eye.

• Started posting lists of newly activated memberships on the message board. This is a manual process that will be replaced by an automated process at a later date.
