Site Updates and Events in 2008
This is a log of significant events and updates made to the GNR in 2008.
7 December 2008:
- The function to log into the GNR website has been removed due to a technical problem. There is no forecast date for the return of this function and those functions that rely on it. This means that only public, non-interactive parts of the website will be available for the foreseeable future. In particular, the GNR message board is effectively closed until further notice.
6 December 2008:
- Amalgamated and (in some cases) reinstated the numerous and disjointed implicit and explicit terms and conditions that have existed and do exist on the GNR Website into a single document titled "Terms of Use". Made recorded agreement with these Terms of Use a requirement of new and continued memberships.
- Expanded the list of pages that are and information that is now visible only by members once they are logged in to include the following:
- The current message board,
- All messages posted during the current month and previous month,
- All messages posted prior to April 2002,
- The posting page for the message board,
- Certain personal information in the Names Directory,
- The form for sending messages to other members, and
- The form for updating one's profile in the Names Directory.
15 October 2008:
- The Great North Road website is currently dormant, and the people who run it are on an indefinite sabbatical. No communication relating to this website can be accepted at this time. No new members will be accepted for the foreseeable future, no pending members will be activated, and no help will be available to deal with any issues relating to existing memberships. Any functions that can run without the intervention of a human will continue working, but any that break will not be fixed. We regret the necessity to make this decision.
4 February 2008:
- Added a map showing the routes of the early European travellers in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. This comes with extensive list of early explorers, including those involved from before 1890, those on Livingstone's Zambezi expedition (1858-63), and the Portuguese expedition to Northern Rhodesia (1798-99).
